The U.N. cultural organization added an ancient temple site in Cambodia to its world heritage list, the government said on Sunday, bringing the number of heritage sites in the Southeast Asian country to three. Sambor Prei Kuk temple, an archaeological site of Ancient Ishanapura, is seen in Kampong Thom province, Cambodia May 20, 2017. Sambor Prei Kuk, or "temple in the richness of the forest" in the Khmer language, located 206 km (128 miles) north of the capital Phnom Penh, is home to numerous temples, ten of which are octagonal. "Some of these elements, including lintels, pediments and colonnades, are true masterpieces," UNESCO said on its website. The United Nations Education, Science and Culture Organisation (UNESCO) has added 21 new World Heritage sites at the 40th annual meeting of its World Heritage Committee in Istanbul, Turkey. The additions bring the total number of sites on the list to 911 , which include natural attractions like the Grand Canyon as well as man-made and cultural sites like the Acropolis. The new sites added to the list, which are selected by the World Heritage Committee of the UNESCO as being of special cultural or physical significance, include China’s Zuojiang Huashan rock art cultural landscape; the archaeological site of Nalanda Mahavihara in India; the Qanat water systems in Iran and artificial islets of Nan Madol in Micronesia. 21 new sites on UNESCO World Heritage List
(Cinet)- The list of World Heritage Sites now includes 21 new sites, a UNESCO meeting decided Monday. Meeting under the Chairmanship of the Minister of Culture of Brazil, João Luiz da Silva Ferreira, the Committee inscribed 21 new sites, including 15 cultural, 5 natural and 1 mixed properties, making a total of 911 sites inscribed on the List. Three countries, Kiribati, Marshall Islands and Tajikistan, had sites added for the first time. One existing natural site was also recognized for its cultural values and thus becomes a mixed site. The World Heritage Committee also added four sites to the List of World Heritage in Danger and removed the Galapagos Islands (Ecuador) from this List.
