By Robert Bicknell Matt Kuchar made the news recently, not because of him winning US$1.3 million Mayakoba Classic in Mexico, but rather how much he paid his caddie. Normally, a Tour caddie will receive around 10 per cent of the prize if his player wins. Otherwise, he gets a specified amount for a Top 10 finish, or in many cases simply a set amount per day. If it was his normal caddie, the guy would have got $130,000. Caddies often have to pay for their own transportation to and from events, and other normal expenditures, unless a deal had been previously reached with the player. The more famous and respected the caddie, the better deal he can cut for himself. So, now we have Matt Kuchar without a caddie for the Mexican event and he hires a local caddie David Ortiz known as “El Tucan”. He arranges a set amount for the week, and offers $4,000 for a Top 10 finish. But the problem is, Kuchar didn’t expect to win the event, especially as he hasn’t won … [Read more...] about What’s the deal with caddies?

Friday's Tale Who is the real player? Phuong Thao Friday, Dec 2, 2016,20:49 (GMT+7) Who is the real player?Phuong Thao Due to its misleading fish sauce test results, the Vietnam Standard and Consumers Association (Vinastas) last week issued an official apology to consumers, fish sauce producers, distributors and authorities. Nonetheless, the damaging impact of the wrongful survey is so huge that it might take the country’s traditional fish sauce industry a long time to recover. Vinastas chairman Doan Phuong said in a statement that the survey team was confused by the term “arsenic” as defined by the Vietnam Encyclopedia. This is meant to explain why the association did not make clear whether arsenic is in its organic or inorganic form. The survey simply claimed traditionally made fish sauce contained a higher-than-permitted level of arsenic, which was later ascertained as organic. Arsenic is highly toxic in its … [Read more...] about Who is the real player?

Viet Nam News By Robert Bicknell As a golf pro, club manager and general observer of the human condition, I have often wondered why people cheat when there is no reason to. What drives them to do so? Why do people cheat to win tournaments, why do they cheat on their handicaps? Not all players try to inflate their handicaps, some players also only put in their best cards to have a lower handicap than actual, just to walk around the clubhouse with their chest stuck out. Why do they do it? In golf, we like to say that “you’re only cheating yourself” and “you have to look at yourself in the mirror every morning and know you’re a cheater”, but if you analyze those statements without emotion, you’d quickly realize that it’s complete and total bullshit because everyone cheats at something, or has the capacity to do so. In my opinion, cheating depends on the opportunity, the chances and penalties for getting caught and the rewards for … [Read more...] about People who cheat to win at anything
