390 Vietnamese people brought home from Myanmar

As many as 390 Vietnamese citizens have just been brought home from Myanmar on two Vietnam Airlines flights which landed at Danang International Airport on Thursday afternoon.


390 Vietnamese citizens are brought home from Myanmar on two Vietnam Airlines flights on March 4.

The fights were arranged by authorities of the two countries to bring home people in difficult circumstances in Myanmar who want to return to Vietnam.


According to the Vietnamese Embassy in Myanmar, it has been difficult to travel in Yangon over recent days due to on-going demonstrations by local people.

Passengers were also asked to follow strict Covid-19 prevention and control regulations including making health declarations, wearing face masks and protective clothing.

Vietnam Airlines brings British, Vietnamese nationals home amid global lockdown

The Hanoitimes – Repatriated Vietnamese nationals are people under 18, elderly, of poor health condition, and of special cases.

Vietnam Airlines, the national flag carrier, on April 15 brought nearly 100 Vietnamese citizens home after flying more than 100 people of British, Irish and other nationalities to the UK.

The airline also carried 2.5 tons of airfreight consisting 140,000 facemasks and other medical supplies gifted by the Vietnamese government and people to aid the UK in combating Covid-19.

The Vietnamese people on the flight back to their home country included students under 18 years of age, elderly people, and those facing hardships. The plane landed on Van Don airport in the northern province of Quang Ninh, and the repatriated people were taken to quarantine facilities and put under medical check.

The British Embassy in Cambodia, the Irish Embassy in Vietnam, relevant local authorities, and especially Vietnam Airlines had tried their best to make the flight possible, according to the British Embassy in Vietnam.

Under the request by Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc, Vietnamese diplomatic missions have been trying to repatriate Vietnamese citizens who are stranded abroad with the priority given to people under 18, the elderly, the sick, and those of special cases. The repatriation is required to meet the quarantine capacity domestically.

Vietnam Airlines said this is the sixth flight bringing Vietnamese citizens home, but gave no details of timeline.

Speaking at an online press conference on April 9, Spokesperson Le Thi Thu Hang of the Vietnam’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that Vietnam always creates favorable conditions for foreign diplomatic missions to conduct citizen protection measures and for foreigners who face difficulties to fly back to their home countries.

Vietnam has worked with foreign missions to support citizens of some European countries to return home. In the coming time, the Vietnamese government will continue assisting the repatriation of foreign visitors.

So far, Vietnam has brought back nearly 1,500 citizens, mainly from Europe and the US, the spokesperson said.

Yen Tu pagoda complex silenced by Covid-19

A checkpoint on the way to Yen Tu Mountain in Uong Bi Town of Quang Ninh, home to world famous Ha Long Bay.

All pagodas and temples in Quang Ninh were shut from Feb. 14 to March 2 as the northern province became a major Covid-19 hotspot, with 61 community transmissions recorded during the country’s latest outbreak that commenced on Jan. 28.

Overcrowding is common at pilgrim sites in the early days of the first lunar month annually.

In previous years, Yen Tu received tens of thousands of Buddhist pilgrims a day during the first lunar months seeking to pray for luck and peace.

Visitors can take a cable car, built 10 years ago, to Dong Pagoda at the mountain top.

An employee remains on duty to operate the cable car even though there is no one around.

The footpath to Hoa Yen Pagoda is left completely deserted.

Yen Tu Mountain is associated with the legend of King Tran Nhan Tong, who founded the Truc Lam Zen sect in the late 13th century after abdicating his throne and embracing the life of a Buddhist monk on the mountain.

All temples and pagodas on the mountain stand bereft of visitors.

At an altitude of 535 meters above sea level, Hoa Yen Pagoda is the oldest and biggest in Yen Tu.

Quang Ninh has recorded no Covid-19 community transmissions over the past three weeks. Provincial authorities allowed some non-essential services to resume operations from Wednesday except in Dong Trieu Town, formerly under lockdown.

But pandemic prevention protocols remain in place, including social distancing, health declarations and masks, while tourist services are only allowed to serve locals.

Trading value hits monthly high as VN-Index dips

The index started off in the green before dipping by nearly 28 points starting at around 10.40 a.m. while a slight recovery in the afternoon was unable to bring it back to the starting point. It closed with a 18.43-point drop, ending a chain of five consecutive gaining sessions.

Trading value on the Ho Chi Minh City Stock Exchange (HoSE), on which the index is based, rose 9.8 percent to VND16.8 trillion ($728.4 million), the highest since February 1. The bourse saw 95 stocks gain and 362 lose.

Many investors reported overloads on the bourse even in the morning. There were times when buy orders were delayed for two or three minutes, they said.

The VN30 basket, comprising the 30 largest capped stocks on the HoSE, saw 29 stocks in the red. VIC of biggest conglomerate Vingroup was the only ticker with no price change at VND106,900.

Losing blue chips were led by TCH of real estate company Hoang Huy Investment Financial Services JSC, down 4.2 percent, and SSI of SSI Securities Corporation, down 4 percent.

They were followed by five banks, including TPB of private TPBank, down 3.7 percent, STB of Ho Chi Minh City-based lender Sacombank, down 3.4 percent and TCB of the largest private lender Techcombank, down 3.2 percent.

Foreign investors were net sellers for the 10th session in a row to the tune of VND229.6 billion, with the strongest pressure on VNM of dairy giant Vinamilk, VIC and VCB of state-owned lender Vietcombank.

The HNX-Index for stocks on the Hanoi Stock Exchange, home to mid and small caps, gained 0.66 percent, while the UPCoM-Index for stocks on the Unlisted Public Companies Market fell 0.18 percent.

Four Vietnamese universities break into Quacquarelli Symonds global ranking

Vietnam National University-Ho Chi Minh City and its Hanoi sister entered the 801-1000 band of the 2021 rankings, compiled by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), a British firm specializing in overseas education, and released Thursday.

Last year, both schools had entered the top 1000 in the global ranking.

This year, the Hanoi University of Science and Technology made it into the list for the first time, placed in the 1001+ bracket along with HCMC-based Ton Duc Thang University.

The list analyzes six factors including academic reputation, employer reputation, faculty/student ratio, citations per faculty, international faculty ratio and international student ratio to compile the rankings that rate 1,011 universities from 80 countries and territories.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology topped the 2021 QS University World Ranking, followed by Stanford and Harvard in the U.S.

According to QS, Vietnam National University-HCMC hosts up to 61,905 students and 3,985 faculty staff. Its research output is assessed at ‘high level.’

The Hanoi school is home to around 35,000 students and 2,600 academic staff, with its research output also appraised at ‘high level’.

The Hanoi University of Science and Technology has a total 128 international students and 1,480 faculty staff while Ton Duc Thang has 417 international students and 1,460 faculty staff.

Vietnamese universities have been performing well in other global education rankings too.

Vietnam National University-Hanoi and Vietnam National University-HCMC last year entered the Best Global Universities rankings put out by the U.S. News & World Report while Ton Duc Thang University, with two campuses in HCMC, was named among the top 400 global universities in the Times Higher Education’s University Impact Rankings last April.
