With the onset of the rainy season in the delta, the country’s largest rice, fruit and seafood producer, the saltwater intrusion has been declined significantly, local reports say. The delta normally faces saltwater intrusion in the dry season which lasts from December to April, severely impacting agricultural production and the lives of locals. To cope with saltwater intrusion in the just concluded dry season, farmers implemented various prevention measures as advised by local authorities, including building temporary saltwater prevention dams and storing fresh water. Ministry urges conservation of groundwater resources
Local people in central Thừa Thiên-Huế Province's Nam Đông District have to wash clothes in a pool of water near their houses due to water shortage. — VNA/VNS Photo HÀ NỘI — The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MoRE) has called on provinces and cities nationwide to increase the conservation of groundwater resources. MoNRE said that many localities have been working to protect groundwater resources by limiting exploitation, filling in unused wells, and controlling drilling and exploration activities, which has helped prevent dropping groundwater levels, saltwater intrusion, and land subsidence in urban and delta areas, especially big cities like Hà Nội and HCM City, the Mekong Delta, and some coastal provinces. However, it also pointed out that one of the main causes of land subsidence and groundwater pollution, degradation and exhaustion was a lack of attention to geological exploration, mineral mining and construction activities. In its written request, the … [Read more...] about Ministry urges conservation of groundwater resources

Transport infrastructure development key to Mekong Delta growth
Largest food producer, exporter The Mekong Delta boasts huge potential and advantages for agricultural development and is one of the largest, most fertile plains in Southeast Asia in particular, and the world in general. It is Vietnam’s largest producer and exporter of food, aquatic products, and fruits – contributing about 50 percent of rice output, 95 percent of rice exports, nearly 65 percent of aquaculture production, 60 percent of fish exports and nearly 70 percent of all fruits. Harvesting rice in Can Tho The Mekong Delta’s rice output has increased from 4.5 million tonnes in 1976 to nearly 25 million tonnes. In 2017, the prime minister issued Resolution 120 to promote the Mekong Delta’s climate-smart sustainable development, which set goals to 2050 and a vision to 2100 for the region’s prosperity and safe, sustainable development. Vietnam’s agricultural sector urged to modernize technology
At a seminar on using science and technology to improve agricultural productivity and quality held in Can Tho city last week, Deputy Minister Tran Van Tung said the Mekong Delta plays an important role in the country’s agricultural production, contributing 55 percent of the country’s rice output, 69 percent of seafood and 70 percent of fruits. It also accounts for more than 90 percent of rice exports and 60 percent of seafood exports. But much of it is sold as raw products at low value. Inconsistent quality is a problem that plagues the region. Climate change and global integration have also adversely impacted the delta’s agricultural production, Tung said. Droughts, floods and saltwater intrusion, often an impact of climate change, have greatly affected productivity and quality. In this context, besides finding measures to mitigate the impacts of climate change and mapping out programs and policies to speed up restructuring of the sector, quickly ramping up the use of … [Read more...] about Vietnam’s agricultural sector urged to modernize technology
China Eastern crash probe eyes intentional action – sources
Investigators looking into the crash of a China Eastern Airlines jet are examining whether it was due to intentional action on the flight deck, with no evidence found of a technical malfunction, two people briefed on the matter said. The Wall Street Journal reported earlier on Tuesday that flight data from one of the Boeing 737-800's black boxes indicated that someone in the cockpit intentionally crashed the plane, citing people familiar with the preliminary assessment of U.S. officials. Boeing Co, the maker of the jet, and the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) declined to comment and referred questions to Chinese regulators. The Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC), which is leading the investigation, did not respond immediately to a request for comment. The Boeing 737-800, en route from Kunming to Guangzhou, crashed on March 21 in the mountains of the Guangxi region, after a sudden plunge from cruising altitude, killing all 123 passengers and nine crew … [Read more...] about China Eastern crash probe eyes intentional action – sources
