Farmers reduce rice paddy fields over surging production costs in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta
Farmers in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta have been reducing the scale of their rice farming operations due to the rising cost of fertilizers, plant protection products, and labor. Input costs for rice farming, namely fertilizers, agricultural materials, seeds, and labor, have surged since the beginning of this year, resulting in losses for farmers, according to Nguyen Trung Phuong, a resident in Vinh Long Province. Fertilizers now sell at VND1-1.5 million (US$43-64) per bag, Phuong added. To minimize his losses, Phuong and his family have scaled down the size of their rice paddy farm. Aside from fresh water resources and weather conditions, operating cost have emerged as a serious concern for local farmers, according to Au Trong Huu, an agricultural official in Tan An Luong Commune in Vinh Long. Hanoi last month resumed its night tour of Thang Long Imperial Citadel, a complex of buildings first constructed in 1011 under the reign of King Ly Thai To. It was constructed on the remains of a Chinese fortress dating from the seventh century, on drained land reclaimed from Red River Delta in Hanoi. It was the center of regional political power for almost 13 centuries, from the Ly, Tran to Le dynasties. The tour that lasts an hour and a half starts from Doan Mon, the main gate of the imperial citadel at 18 Hoang Dieu Street, Ba Dinh District. From the gate tourists commence along roads paved with lemon flower bricks built under Tran Dynasty to Thien An Palace. A royal court ceremony and ancient dance performance called "Thang Long Palace" is staged on top of the archaeological remains. Tourist dies after falling off cruise ship in Vietnam’s Ha Long Bay
A tourist died after falling off a cruise ship as it was approaching a port in Ha Long Bay, a famous destination in northern Vietnam, last weekend. The People’s Committee in Ha Long City, Quang Ninh Province confirmed on Sunday that local units had found the body of Nguyen Ngoc Phat, 43, a visitor from the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho. Phat was among the 15 passengers who boarded the Long Giang cruise ship in Ha Long Bay on Saturday. The ship, which has a capacity of 48 passengers, was steered by captain Tran Duy Cuong, 39, a resident of Ha Long. At around 5:00 pm that day, the boat was carrying the tourists from Sung Sot Cave back to the mainland. As they were approaching the port, the captain checked the CCTV and noticed that a passenger had fallen into the water. The victim was standing near the bow of the ship prior to the accident. Ba Chua Xu Temple has recently received a large number of visitors.
