HCMC to build new water pipelineVan Nam The signing ceremony between Saigon Water Corporation (SAWACO) and France’s consortium comprising VINCI Construction Grands Projets and Bessac CW1 - PHOTO: VAN NAM HCMC – Saigon Water Corporation (SAWACO) on August 24 clinched a contract with France’s consortium comprising VINCI Construction Grands Projets and Bessac CW1 to build a new water pipeline in the east of HCMC. According to the US$70-million deal, the consortium will install a 10-kilometer pipeline with a diameter of 2.4 meters, which will pass through the Saigon River, Rach Chiec Canal and Nhieu Loc – Thi Nghe Canal to the intersection of Dien Bien Phu and Nguyen Binh Khiem streets. VND100-billion water plant close to bankruptcy By Van Nam - The Saigon Times Daily HCMC – Dang Doan Nguyen Joint Stock Company has proposed the HCMC government to buy its Can Gio brackish water plant which at an investment cost of around VND100 billion is on the verge of bankruptcy. Speaking to the Daily on Monday, board chairwoman Nguyen Thi Dong Dao said that the firm had suffered losses of nearly VND80 billion since operating the plant in 2008 due to low water demand in Can Gio and the surging operating cost. According to Dao, when going into operation in August, 2008, the plant had a filtering capacity of 5,000 cubic meters per day. Nguyen Thuy Dong Dao, director of the firm, explained that the water volume sold to Can Gio was not enough to cover the operation cost and the firm was on the verge of bankruptcy. Hanoi to build new water plant and pipelineVan Ly By Van Ly - The Saigon Times Daily HANOI - Hanoi City is urgently preparing plans to build a water treatment plant and a water pipeline to ensure sufficient water supply for residents. A source from the Hanoi government said the city’s vice chairman Nguyen Quoc Hung had signed a decision approving phase-one construction of the Red River water treatment facility in Hong Lien Commune in Dan Phuong District. The VND3.7-trillion plant is designed to treat 300,000 cubic meters of water a day in phase one for users in the city’s central area and Hoai Duc District as well as the areas without access to running water in the west of Ring Road 3, the north of National Highway 32 of North Tu Liem District, and Dan Phuong District. The pipeline that transmits clean water from the Da River Water Plant in the northern province of Hoa Binh to Hanoi was believed to break again on Thursday, causing approximately 70,000 households in the capital city to have no access to clean water for 12 hours. But the owner of the pipeline claimed that it was a leak, not a break, and the water supply cut was due to repair work. This was the 10th time the pipeline had either snapped or leaked for the past 35 months. The reported rupture occurred at 8:00 am, when water supply to tens of thousands of households in Thanh Xuan, Hoang Mai, Ha Dong, and Cau Giay Districts in the capital was suddenly cut. The pipeline’s owner, Vinaconex Water Supply Joint Stock Company (Viwasupco), belonging to Vietnam Construction Import-Export Joint Stock Corporation (Vinaconex), admitted that a problem had occurred to a section of the pipeline in Quoc Oai District.
