The plant, the only one in the province, officially began receiving rubbish from 6pm last Thursday, and started operating at 8am the next day. Residents suffer pollution from waste treatment plant
Viet Nam News THANH HÓA — Up to four thousand people in Quảng Trạch Commune in Thanh Hóa Province have been suffering severe environmental pollution, reported online newspaper dantri.com.vn. The air pollution is allegedly being caused by a waste treatment plant in neighbouring Quảng Tân Commune. Residents of the commune complain of near-constant noxious fumes and bad odours emanating from the plant. “The plant burns garbage day and night, causing a terrible smell, especially in hot weather,” said one local. “In recent years, no one leaves their homes when the plant is discharging waste,” he said. The paper reported that the plant is located near residential areas and schools in Quảng Trạch Commune. Study finds large dioxin emissions from Vietnam’s waste treatment plants
Many incinerators that burn industrial and medical waste in Vietnam are discharging dangerous amounts of dioxin, some at 5,000 times the safe limit, according to a new research. Le Ke Son, the lead researcher and a former official at the environment ministry, said the report is the first time “Vietnam admits that there’s dioxin discharged from industrial activities besides from dioxin left from the war.” The research was conducted by Steering Committee 33, a national committee set up to mitigate the effects of toxic chemicals used by the US during the Vietnam War, and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment. Dioxin, one of the most toxic and persistent compounds which can leave impacts including cancer through generations, can be inhaled or digested.
