SINGAPORE - Media OutReach - December 11, 2019 -Stamford American International School - Sleeping Out in Solidarity. To raise awareness of homelessness and the refugee predicament worldwide, a pioneering group comprising of 16 Grade 11 and 12 students as well as 4 teachers took part in their first ever Sleep Out on school premises as part of The World's Big Sleep Out. World's Big Sleep Out at Stamford American International School Singapore The World's Big Sleep Out is now an annual global event to help raise awareness and funds to help the world's homeless and displaced. The Sleep Out was held across 52 cities, with over 50,000 people taking part. Even celebrities such as Will Smith and Dame Helen Mirren read bedtime stories to participants who braved the winter weather to sleep on the street in New York and London respectively. Nguyen Binh Khiem Primary School located in District 1 of HCMC has just launched the project ‘Experimental Teaching in Social and Natural Science Subjects’ for third graders. Ms. Tran Bich Ngoc, teacher in charge of the lesson named ‘My Current City’, shared that she needed to integrate knowledge of various subjects like History, Moral lessons, Geography, Arts, and Music in order to present the content. Thanks to advanced equipment such as interactive boards and digital image databases, her pupils had a chance to observe attractive pictures, video clips about famous locations in HCMC like Ben Thanh Market, Nguyen Hue pedestrian street. I knew instantly that I would never see it. Three months after Christmas, I was still waiting for a postcard sent by my mum. As my eldest brother noted over the phone, there was a little bit of Christmas cash tucked inside for me. Considering that the Vietnamese postal system has always opened every single letter and parcel I’ve ever received, I knew the money would be taken. Although I hoped I’d at least receive the card, minus the cash, it never came. Among the banes of living in Vietnam, the postal service is a regular annoyance. Mind you, I was amazed seven years ago to get a parcel from my mum with all the great candy she sent still intact despite a horrid sticky-tape repair job on the box. Even my motorbike guy can plug a hole better than that. Maybe it’s because the postal service here is just too busy.
