Two local beauties have been named in the list of the leading 50 candidates of Miss Grand Slam 2021, as announced by Global Beauties. Nguyen Thuc Thuy Tien, the first-ever Vietnamese beauty queen to claim the title of Miss Grand International, is one of two Vietnamese beauties to make the list. The other local beauty queen among the 50 most beautiful girls on the planet is Nguyen Huynh Kim Duyen, who is notable for claiming a Top 16 finish in Miss Universe 2021. Duyen will represent the nation by competing at Miss Supranational 2022 this July. Hoa Phat Group, four Vietnamese banks among world’s 2,000 largest companies
Hoa Phat Group and four commercial banks of Vietnam have been named in this year’s Forbes list of the world’s 2,000 largest companies (Global 2000). This year, Hoa Phat Group is named on the list for the first time with revenues of 1.5 billion USD and market value of 8.53 billion USD. A team of three Vietnamese high school students has won an international prize on environmental sustainability. Nguyen Thi Oanh is the current forerunner of Vietnamese athletics. In SEA Games 2017, she clinched the double gold medal in the 800-meter and 1,500-meter distances and helped Vietnam dominate these categories ever since. In SEA Games 2019, she successfully defended her gold medals in these two events, and scored another in the 3,000-meter hurdle race. Vietnamese whale worshippers rejoice as 300-year-old skeleton restored
After nearly 300 years, two whale skeletons in Quang Ngai Province, central Vietnam have been restored and put on display for public view. It is common practice amongst Vietnamese fishermen to store the skeletons of whales that washed ashore in temples. There, locals worship the bones of these massive sea creatures. In Ly Son District, a string of islands off the coast of central Vietnam, two of these skeletons were recently completely restored for a public display. Grandfather fish Fishermen in Vietnam call whales ‘grandfather fish,’ implying that they are of a high status. In Ly Son, an area which holds whales in particularly high regard, locals are excited for their two recently restored whale skeletons to be put on display. “Very soon everyone will get to see the grandfather fish at the Tan temple,” said 79-year-old Pham Thoai Tuyen. Vietnamese PE teacher dreams of teaching 1 million kids to swim
Huynh Duc Linh, a Vietnamese physical education teacher, is pursuing his dream of teaching swimming to one million kids in Vietnam, spending the last six years teaching over 10,000 students. In 2019, Linh was informed of nine students from Nghia Ha Middle School in central Quang Ngai Province dying in a tragic drowning incident. Since then, Linh and his colleagues have tried to teach swimming skills to children, reaching their target of running courses for over 10,000 kids after six years. Recently, the government has called for far more actions to prevent drowning , making Linh and his team decide to pursue a bigger dream: teaching up to one million kids to swim. More than 2,000 under-16-year-old children drown a year in Vietnam, the World Health Organization cited an estimate in 2020. Vietnamese swimming team exceeds gold medal target at SEA Games 31
Ben Tre-born swimmer Pham Thanh Bao opened an impressive competition day of Vietnamese athletes with his an ecstatic performance in the men's 50m breaststroke event. The 21-year-old swimmer won a gold medal with a time of 28.28 seconds, beating strong rivals from Indonesia and Singapore. It was also his second gold at this year’s Games. Meanwhile, Tran Hung Nguyen pocketed a gold medal after his surprising performance in the men’s 200m medley event with a time of 2 minutes and 1.22 seconds. The 19-year-old swimmer competed with their strong rivals Kaewsriyoung Dulyawat of Thailand and Maximillian Wei Ang of Singapore in this event. The silver and bronze medalists in the day were Vo Thi My Tien and Hoang Quy Phuoc, respectively, who competed in the women’s 1,500m freestyle and the men’s 200m freestyle events.
