A Vietnamese-French academic was presented with the Maurice Audin mathematics prize in Paris on Wednesday for his great contribution to the field, after a two-year wait. According to the French website Images des mathématiques (or Images of Math), Prof. Ngo Bao Chau, 46, a Vietnamese-French mathematician at the University of Chicago, was announced the winner of the 2016 edition of the Maurice Audin prize. Images des mathématiques is published by the French National Center for Scientific Research (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique – CNRS) and devoted to popularization in mathematics, with an aim to show the diversity of the science in an attractive way – words and pictures. SEA Games: Meet the most prolific Vietnamese athletes
Nguyen Thi Oanh is the current forerunner of Vietnamese athletics. In SEA Games 2017, she clinched the double gold medal in the 800-meter and 1,500-meter distances and helped Vietnam dominate these categories ever since. In SEA Games 2019, she successfully defended her gold medals in these two events, and scored another in the 3,000-meter hurdle race. Young Vietnamese turn to mortgages, installment plans to secure dream homes
Le Thi Bao Tran, a young white-collar worker in Ho Chi Minh City, has spent the past eight years moving between rented rooms, doing her best to save up enough money to purchase a home of her own. Like other young, white-collar workers who have moved to Ho Chi Minh City to pursue their careers, Tran hopes to eventually purchase a home in the city, but the rising cost of real estate has kept that dream out of reach. A lifelong dream Tran spent her college years moving between rental apartments in Binh Thanh District. At one point, she shared a tiny 10-square-meter apartment with a friend for just VND1.1 million ($47) per month, including utilities. Vietnamese students finish third at US science contest
Two Vietnamese students have won third prize at the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) 2022, the largest international pre-college science competition recently held in the United States. Tran Phong and Tran My Chi, who won third prize at ISEF 2022, pose for a photo with their teacher. Tran Phong and Tran My Chi, both of whom are currently studying at Lao Cai High School for Gifted Students, were awarded US$2,000 after impressing judges with their entry of a mobile blood bank. Their project helps to create a strong connection between hospitals and blood donors in order to allow them to promptly provide drops of blood, a move which could contribute to saving the lives of critically-ill patients. Vietnamese whale worshippers rejoice as 300-year-old skeleton restored
After nearly 300 years, two whale skeletons in Quang Ngai Province, central Vietnam have been restored and put on display for public view. It is common practice amongst Vietnamese fishermen to store the skeletons of whales that washed ashore in temples. There, locals worship the bones of these massive sea creatures. In Ly Son District, a string of islands off the coast of central Vietnam, two of these skeletons were recently completely restored for a public display. Grandfather fish Fishermen in Vietnam call whales ‘grandfather fish,’ implying that they are of a high status. In Ly Son, an area which holds whales in particularly high regard, locals are excited for their two recently restored whale skeletons to be put on display. “Very soon everyone will get to see the grandfather fish at the Tan temple,” said 79-year-old Pham Thoai Tuyen.
