Madan Mohan Sethi, Indian Consul General in Ho Chi Minh City, has estimated that India still has a rough two months ahead in its battle against the current wave of COVID-19 ripping through his country.
“I am also a doctor. I understand that every disease has its own path of release, so once it goes up, the number [of cases] can come back,” Sethi told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper on Monday.
“Now, people also understand the importance of masks and social distancing, so people will follow it, I think.”
Consul General Sethi is a trained doctor who spent four years working at hospitals in India’s Odisha State before serving as a diplomat.
According to Sethi, Indian authorities are scrambling to fight the pandemic and partner with other countries to import much-needed medical supplies, particularly oxygen.
“We have started an oxygen express by a railway,” Sethi said.
“I believe things will get better over the next week.
“In one to two months, I expect things to return to normal.”
Despite the complicated progression of the pandemic in his country, Consul General Sethi still has lofty expectations for cooperation between Vietnam and India in areas such as trade, manufacturing, investment, education, and tourism.
At a press conference held on Monday, Sethi shared that the Consulate General of India in Ho Chi Minh City has received inquiries from approximately 50 Indian businesses wishing to enter the Vietnamese market, as well as several expressions of interest from Vietnamese enterprises hoping to secure a foothold in India.
Sethi also voiced his hope that once the pandemic situation improves, commercial flights between Vietnam and India will resume and business relations between the two countries will prosper.
The Indian Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City is also putting effort into developing two-way tourism and creating a bridge that promotes educational cooperation between Vietnam and India.
Specifically, the consulate has so far cooperated with universities in both countries to organize short-term online training sessions for students in Vietnam.
India will celebrate 75 years of independence in 2022.
To mark this important milestone, the Indian Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City will organize 75 activities and events in honor of Indian achievements.
According to the consulate, this series of activities will include talks on different aspects of India, exhibitions, cultural events, and other outreach activities.
