Vietnam entirely justified in exercising self-defense against Khmer Rouge: Carl Thayer

Famous specialist on Southeast Asia Carl Thayer said Vietnam was entirely justified under international law in exercising self-defense against the Khmer Rouge who first attacked Vietnamese island territories in 1975. Vietnam and Cambodia celebrated the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations on June 24, 2022. Vietnam, Hungary to sign new parliamentary cooperation agreement

Hungary was the first European Union state to approve the EU-Vietnam Investment Protection Agreement (EVIPA). Vietnam and Hungary are expected to sign an agreement on cooperation between the two parliaments in replacement of the one inked in 2008. Vietnam rescues 400 citizens tricked to work illegally in Cambodia

So far this year, authorities in Vietnam and Cambodia have worked together to verify cases in which Vietnamese people had been taken to Cambodia by human traffickers. The collaboration resulted in nearly 400 Vietnamese being rescued and brought home, Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Le Thi Thu Hang told press Sunday. In recent times, it has been increasingly reported that many Vietnamese had been tricked to work in Cambodia. In most cases, trafficking rings advertised their services on Facebook and Zalo, a Vietnamese texting and calling app, targeting people of working age but without stable jobs, promising a career with a monthly salary of up to thousands of dollars. The victims were typically smuggled into Cambodia via unofficial routes and sent to work at foreign-owned companies. Nam San 3A hydropower plant was initially owned by Lao-based Phongsubthavy Group but was sold to Thai BCPG Niwat Adirek, president and CEO of BCPG, disclosed that the company had achieved more than 90 per cent progress on the construction of the 220-kV transmission line project, Nam Tai, in Laos. The Nam Tai project is planned to connect with the transmission line of Electricity of Vietnam (EVN) to transmit electricity generated from BCPG’s two hydropower plants in Laos, Nam San 3A and Nam San 3B, to Vietnam this September. “The Nam Tai transmission line project has the capacity to transmit 800 MW electricity generated from hydropower plants in Northern Laos to Northern Vietnam. The Southeast Asian country scored 78.49 points, ranking 62nd out of the 165 countries, a great leap from its ranking of 101st out of the 171 countries in the previous year. Finland was named as the best country in the world in 2021 for quality of life with 99.06 points, while Denmark and Norway came second and third with 98.13 points and 96.75 points, respectively. Just days after arriving in Abyei, the unit set up two teams for emergency road rescue and repair activities along roads in the northern division - a border area between Sudan and South Sudan. The unit also took over the construction of a workshop for repairing and maintaining equipment, cars and motorbikes of the UN peacekeeping mission, which the first group of the unit had been working on since early May. Vietnam’s economy expects strong recovery

In 2020-2021, despite being heavily affected by the COVID-19 epidemic, Vietnam’s GDP still maintained positive growth, mainly thanks to the growth of import-export and investment, especially foreign direct investment. In fact, a number of industries recovered strongly after the epidemic such as retail, personal goods, and pharmaceuticals, due to a good recovery in domestic demand. Construction industry pins hope in public investment, FDI and real estate to bounce back. Some industries showed good recovery reaching close to the pre-pandemic period, including transportation, warehousing, and forestry, while logistics sector is expected to be a bright spot in the coming years.
