The lizard was found on Ba Den mountain where two other new species were discovered earlier, Tuoi Tre newspaper reported. Its body is 78 millimeters long and has dark brown spots on the back and neck. It is the 32nd lizard species found in Vietnam and has been named “Cyrtodactylus thuongae,” for Dr Nguyen Thi Lien Thuong, a lecturer at the Ho Chi Minh City University of Food Industry, thanks to her contributions to the research into and discovery of amphibious lizards in Vietnam. She is the only woman member of www.vietnamcreatures.net, a website dedicated to the country's wild flora and fauna. Phung My Trung, a researcher who manages the website, told Tuoi Tre that the scientists spent more than three years looking for the lizard after they found a dead one to the east of Ba Den. They found another specimen a few … [Read more...] about New lizard, frog found in Vietnam’s mountains
Mark Wiens sits down at a restaurant on Vo Van Tan Street in a busy corner of downtown Ho Chi Minh City after ordering some grilled beef in piper lolot leaves. "Bo la lot," he repeats after the chef lady in Vietnamese that is almost perfect for a first timer. He lays out the feast, examining everything from the pieces of peanut on top of the sausage-like rolls, a side dish of raw vegetables and some red chili that has been chopped into tiny pieces. Then he rolls everything up in a piece of rice paper, dunks the roll in a small bowl of fermented fish sauce, and takes a big bite. Now you have to wait for him for 30 seconds as he makes a delighted face, and he will tell you how the combination tastes and what more is in there. Wiens, a Thailand-based American food blogger, visited Vietnam last year and has uploaded nearly 30 such videos of the foods he tried, mostly in Ho Chi Minh City. He has blogged about all of Vietnam’s most popular foods like the iconic noodle soup pho, the … [Read more...] about US food blogger brings lesser-known Vietnamese dishes into limelight
Editor’s note: A foreign reader sent this story to Tuoi Tre News, narrating his own experience dealing with the customs officers who purportedly demanded money from passengers on their leaving Vietnam at Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City. Harry Hightower said he managed to avoid losing money to the customs officers thanks to the warnings he had learned from travel guide sources, as he recalled in the following story, which exclusively reflects his own view and experience. I'm so glad that Tuoi Tre News published the article "Passengers beware! Customs officers reportedly wrest money for gifts taken out of Vietnam" to bring to light the bribery that the customs officers demanded from travelers. You can include this issue among the many that you've very well documented in the recent articles regarding the decline of Vietnam’s tourism industry. I would be very surprised if the executives don't know about [what the customs officers did]. It's bad enough … [Read more...] about Foreigner recalls how he disappointed money-demanding customs officers in Vietnam
