Illustrative image (Photo: AP) Vientiane (VNA) – The Lao government is focusing on implementing an array of hydropower projects nationwide to increase its electricity exports to regional countries, including Vietnam and Cambodia. Laos has signed contracts with Vietnam Electricity (EVN) covering 25 projects with a combined capacity of 2,180 MW, of which Sekaman 1, Sekamansanse and Sekaman 3 already have a total capacity of 572 MW. With an accumulative capacity of 1,608 MW, the remainders are scheduled to be put into operation and supply electricity for Vietnam from 2022-2025. The two countries have also reached memoranda of understanding on other projects, helping to push total electricity output expected to be exported from Laos to Vietnam to 8,148 MW by 2030. Vietnam leaps up global quality of life ranking
Vietnam earned a score of 78.49 to rank 62 out of 165 countries and territories included in 2021 World’s Best Countries For Quality of Life recently released, moving up its ranking of 101st out of 171 countries in the previous edition. The ranking was determined based on 10 key categories: affordability, economic stability, family-friendly, a good job market, income equality, political neutrality & stability, safety, cultural influence, well-developed public education system and well-developed public health system. Each attribute was graded on a 100-point scale. Compared to Southeast Asia peers, Vietnam lags behind Singapore (19th place), Thailand (38th), the Philippines (39th), Malaysia (41st) and Indonesia (58th), though ranking above Myanmar (101st), Cambodia (111th) and Timor-Leste (149th). Vietnam Airlines plans to restore its entire flight network by the end of 2023
In the first six months of 2022, Vietnam Airlines has resumed flights to 14 countries and territories, including the UK, France, Germany, Australia, the US, Japan, Korea, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Laos, Cambodia, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. Lately, the airline has opened a new route to India and is preparing the necessary conditions to immediately reopen flights to China, Myanmar, and Russia when the conditions permit. The national carrier is expected to resume flights to Indonesia in July and key international routes to Japan, Korea, and Australia in November at the same flight frequency as in 2019. It hopes that it will be able to restore the entire international flight network, equivalent to that in 2019 by the end of 2023. Vietnam hosts flash flood guidance system in Southeast Asia
The system connects the regional center for supporting flash flood warnings in Southeast Asia and those across the world. Southeast Asia Flash Flood Guidance System (SeAFFGS) has just been put into operation in Vietnam this week, according to the Meteorological and Hydrological Administration of Vietnam (VNMHA) under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MoNRE). The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the VNMHA held a conference on June 28 to announce that Vietnam will assume a central role in forecasting landslides and flash floods. The SeAFFGS project aims to provide forecasts and early warnings for member countries in Southeast Asia, including Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, and Thailand, with a funding of US$1.3 million. National women’s football team leaves for training in France
The Vietnamese female football players (Photo: VNA) Hanoi (VNA) – The national women's football team on June 27 departed for France for a short training session right before entering the 2022 AFF Women's Championship, which is expected to take place in the Philippines in early July. Head coach Mai Duc Chung said he is satisfied with the training results of the whole team so far. A total of 25 players are heading for the training in France and the AFF tournament. The group is scheduled to move to the Philippines on July 2. The championship will run from July 4-17, with the participation of a record 11 teams. ADMM to deepen ASEAN defense cooperation
Many cooperation initiatives have been implemented After the initiative to establish ADMM was approved at the 10th ASEAN Summit in Laos in November 2004, the first ADMM was successfully held in Malaysia in May 2006. Since then, ADMM has become an annual activity of the association’s defense ministers. It aims to promote regional peace and stability via dialogue and cooperation in defense and security; map out orientations for cooperation among ASEAN member countries and between ASEAN, its friends and dialogue partners. It also helps enhance trust and knowledge about defense and security challenges and boost transparency and openness in the region, contributing to building the ASEAN Security Community (later renamed the ASEAN Political-Security Community).
