(Photo courtesy of An Giang Border Guard) An Giang (VNA) - Forty Vietnamese nationals were arrested by An Giang Border Guards on August 18 morning after illegally entering Vietnam from Cambodia. According to their testimony, a total of 42 people tried to escape from a casino in Sampeou Poun commune, Kaoh Thom district, Kandal province in Cambodia and swam across Binh Ghi River to return to Vietnam. They said they had previously fled to Cambodia to work at a casino. Their job was to make online games and go to social media websites at the instruction of the people at the casino but they were constantly forced to work overtime without any payment. Vietnam sees rise in Covid-19 infections and deaths
Vietnam has seen a recent rise in the number of Covid-19 infections and deaths due to the appearance of new Omicron sub-variants. On Thursday, Vietnam recorded 3,295 Covid-19 cases, the highest figure for the past three months. The country also reported a total of around 15,000 Covid-19 infections over the past three days. The number of Covid-19 patients with serious symptoms in the country increased to 208. Over the past week, Vietnam has witnessed seven Covid-19 deaths. Vietnam’s COVID-19 daily count hits 3-month high
Vietnam recorded nearly 3,300 COVID-19 cases on Thursday, the highest daily count in more than three months, with the Ministry of Health attributing the resurgence to the new fast-spreading Omicron sub-variants. The health ministry documented 3,295 COVID-19 patients on Thursday, raising the national tally to 11,376,571, with 10,049,215 recoveries and 43,103 deaths. The country has so far detected four Omicron sub-variants including BA.4, BA.5, BA.2.12.1, and BA.2.74, which are more transmissible than the original strain, according to the General Department of Preventive Medicine under the health ministry. At Hanoi’s COVID-19 treatment hospital, the number of patients has bounced back in the past week. The facility is providing treatment for about 35-37 patients, most of whom have underlying conditions. All rated Vietnamese scientists are working at universities, including Vietnam National University and Ton Duc Thang University. A group of 11 Vietnamese scientists was rated by Research.com, the number one research portal for scientists, in six fields namely Engineering and Technology, Computer Science, Environmental Science, Materials Science, Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, and Medicine. The ranking is based on D-index (Discipline H-index) which includes papers and citation values for an examined discipline in contrast to General H-index accounting for publications across all disciplines. Vietnamese and Cambodian navies to foster coordination
In the morning, the delegations of the two navies held the 16th meeting on joint patrols under the co-chair of Deputy Chief of Staff of the Vietnam People’s Navy Rear Admiral Pham Van Hung and Deputy Chief of Staff of the Royal Cambodian Navy Vice Admiral Non Sophat. Reports at the event revealed that from December, 2021 to August, 2022, the naval forces of the two countries conducted three joint patrols. Participating naval troops of Vietnam and Cambodia have well carried out joint patrol plans and coordination activities, including hand-flag, signal lamp, and “Hello ASEAN” saluting ceremony (a saluting ceremony at sea between naval ships of ASEAN member states).
