Viet Nam News By Võ Lệ Hồng It is not often that we go to a shopping mall when we are hungry. But these days, food courts in major complexes offer a painless transition from shopping generated hunger to its satiation. Last week, we were just window-shopping at the Crescent Mall in Phú Mỹ Hưng in HCM City's District 7 when the hunger pangs began to gnaw at our stomachs. Maybe window-shopping makes one more hungry than actual shopping. Anyway, we decided to go to the fifth floor of the mall for lunch. We were in for a surprise. It was not usual food court fare that was on offer, but a fine dining experience at 48 Bistro restaurant. Already pleased with the ambience and the view (which should be even better at night, looking down at the twinkling Starlight Bridge), we were intrigued on learning that the restaurant offered European dishes with Vietnamese ingredients. We waylaid a customer who was leaving after his lunch. Henri Hubert, a creative director and designer, was … [Read more...] about European flavours, made in Viet Nam

Viet Nam News By Hồ Hoàng Lan Since the time I was young, I have learnt a lot about Cam Ranh in the central province of Khánh Hòa, which is the most beautiful bay in Việt Nam. It is one of the world's three most natural bays after San Francisco and Rio de Janeiro, and recently my family and I had a chance to visit the bay. My two little sons were so excited that they woke up very early in the morning and urged me again and again to begin the tour. We decided to visit Bình Ba first. When we arrived at the Đá Bạc seaport of Cam Ranh City, we went by boat to the island. I have visited many islands in the country such as Hạ Long Bay and Phú Quốc, and enjoyed their natural beauty and landscape, but the sea here felt as if we were in paradise. "Mother, I see the water here seems to be most blue compared with others," my 7-year-old son said. "Oh, and there are a lot of mountain tops from the islands now appearing and disappearing. Excellent," he shouted loudly. Our tour guide Huỳnh … [Read more...] about Viet Nam’s Cam Ranh Bay a pristine paradise
US authorities reject a 20,000 kg shipment of imported catfish from Viet Nam as of banned chemicals. — Photo vov.vn HA NOI (Biz Hub) — The United States Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has rejected a 40,000 pound (about 20,000 kg) shipment of imported catfish from Viet Nam because it tested positive for residues of banned chemicals. According to a news release from Food and Water Watch on August 9, the fish had traces of malachite green, a veterinary drug used to treat sick fish. The inspection of catfish became part of USDA's jurisdiction on April 15. Before that, the Food and Drug Administration handled catfish. In May, FSIS blocked catfish shipments from Vietnam and China. In June, an importer recalled Vietnamese catfish products because the shipment had not gone through the inspection process. In early July, the Agriculture Fisheries and Forestry Quality Center (NAFIQAD) requested all local catfish exporters to the US to have … [Read more...] about US rejects 20,000 kg of catfish from Viet Nam
Viet Nam News by Ruth Sinai In 1968, the Beatles came out with a song called "Money Can't Buy Me Love". The idea that money, or material goods, doesn't equal happiness has since become somewhat clichéd. But just because it's a cliché, doesn't make it less true. In survey after survey, in country after country, when people are asked about the pinnacle of their aspirations - or, simply put, 'what do you want' - the answer is invariably 'to be happy'. How happiness is defined is a different story. It varies among cultures, religions and nations. A UK-based think tank called the New Economies Foundation has a definition that it has been promoting through something it calls "The Happy Planet Index" (HPI). Taking some 140 countries for which data is available, the index seeks to measure how well nations are doing at achieving long, happy, sustainable lives. You may or may not be surprised that wealthy Western countries, often regarded as the epitome of success, do not rank highly on the … [Read more...] about Why is Viet Nam so happy?
Viet Nam News BANGKOK - Thai naval forces have opened fire on three Vietnamese fishing boats from the Mekong Delta province of Bến Tre with 18 fishermen on board, according to the Vietnamese Embassy in Thailand. The firing, at around 14:00 on July 8, has injured two fishermen and left another missing while two of the boats sunk in collision with Thai naval vessels. The fishing boats were chased off by Thai naval police after they were allegedly found illegal operating in Thailand's waters earlier on the same day, said Nguyễn Hải Ngọc, first secretary of the Vietnamese Embassy. The two wounded, Nguyễn Văn Tèo, 28, who was shot in the right leg, and Nguyễn Văn Linh, 25, injured in the shoulder, were brought to the shore by Thailand's helicopter while the remaining 15 crew members were carried onshore by Thai naval vessels, Ngọc added.
