Although decades have passed by, the significance of the victory will forever remain in the minds of the Vietnamese and Cambodian people as well as people around the globe. “Second father” Growing up in the time when Cambodia was facing an unprecedented genocidal disaster in human history, Cambodian Ambassador to Vietnam Chay Navuth saw mass graves when he followed his families to flee from the country. Those mass graves were evidence for the heinous crimes of Pol Pot force. The diplomat’s father was also a victim of the disaster as he was killed by the genocidal Khmer Rouge regime. “Without the support of Vietnamese volunteer soldiers, the Cambodian people, including me, could not have survived,” said Ambassador Chay Navuth. According to the ambassador, his families planned to go to Prey Veng province before fleeing to Dong Thap province of Vietnam, hoping to escape from the brutal “Angkar.” However, on learning that the Vietnamese volunteer troops entered Cambodia, his … [Read more...] about Part 3: Deep sentiment

The grass isn’t always greener
Sadio Mane has left Liverpool for German giants Bayern Munich. Photo courtesy of Bayern Munich FC Paul Kennedy It was with somewhat of a heavy heart this week that I watched Sadio Mane leave Liverpool and sign for Bayern Munich. The Senegalese striker has been brilliant for Jurgen Klopp’s team, arguable his best player over the past 12 months, and although I really didn’t want him to go, I wish him nothing but the best in the Bundesliga. It also marked the end of Liverpool’s famed three-pronged attack that has served them so well in the past. Mohammed Salah and Roberto Firmino remain at the Reds, for now at least, as Mane plies his trade elsewhere. He’s not the first big name to leave Liverpool, and he sure as hell won’t be the last, but maybe he should have given a little thought to those that have left before him, heading off to pastures new. We can start with Philippe Coutinho who in the January of 2018 swapped Anfield for the Camp Nou fulfilling his dream of playing … [Read more...] about The grass isn’t always greener

A photo by photographer Thomas Billhardt . (Photo: VNA) Hanoi (VNA) – Hanoi still provides a source of inspiration for nominations of the 14th “Bui Xuan Phai: For the Love of Hanoi” Awards amid the COVID-19 tourism freeze. Activities and initiatives regarding Hanoi are part of the “dual goal,” as culture always serves as momentum for the development of any city, according to historian Duong Trung Quoc. Nostalgic works The jury panel has selected dozens of works, ideas and deeds over the past years for nominations. These include projects associated with the city’s development and works by Hanoi citizens and even one foreigner. German photographer Thomas Billhardt, whose photos of the Vietnam War taken in the late 1960s helped him to gain fame worldwide, is the only foreigner nominated for the 14th awards. The photo book exhibition by Billhardt introduces for the first time in Vietnam some 130 black-and-white and colour photos taken during his trips to … [Read more...] about Bui Xuan Phai Awards: Culture – momentum for Hanoi’s development
Construction contractors hit hard by surging costs
The owner of a construction company said: "The rising costs have caused severe impacts on my company. We have put two projects on hold and are waiting for prices to go down." Huynh’s company in the neighboring province of Binh Duong is likely to report losses on the construction of a road project it began earlier this year. It cannot back away from the project as the work is 75 percent completed. "We use a lot of diesel each day, and so the rising fuel costs have eaten away all of our profits," Huynh said. The rising costs of raw materials amid surging global inflation is posing problems for construction companies who struggle to renegotiate their contracts as losses loom. Cement prices in Vietnam have gone up three times this year by around 28 percent to VND1.2 million ($51.62) a ton. In the latest increase, 15 major cement producers all hiked prices by up to VND80,000 per ton. Steel prices have been falling due to declining demand in China, but others such as sand, … [Read more...] about Construction contractors hit hard by surging costs
