Foreign markets tighten control on origin traceability
The situation, however, has produced both opportunities and challenges for Vietnamese enterprises in building a trademark for local farm produce that is recognized in foreign markets. Cao Thi Kim Lan, director of Binh Dinh Fishery JSC, said that due to the European Commission’s yellow card on Vietnam’s seafood exports to the European market, 100% of the firm’s exported seafood products were being detained at destination ports for check. The firm has faced multiple difficulties in meeting requirements related to the origins of legal fishing products. Of the 10 fishing boats supplying these materials, the company has only made purchases from three or four boats that have succeeded in meeting the requirements, while the remaining boats failed to sell their products as their owners could not present any fishing diaries or identify their fishing locations. Keeping detailed diaries on fishing practices seems strange to fishermen who are used to traditional fishing … [Read more...] about Foreign markets tighten control on origin traceability
OPEC agrees oil output cuts after much ‘brain squeezing’
Crude prices rallied after Iraq's oil minister said OPEC and other top producers could consider File photo of a crude oil pipeline. (Photo: AFP/DAVID MCNEW) Friday's so-called OPEC+ meeting included Russia, the world's second-largest oil producer and not a member of the cartel. It ended with a deal for a cut effective as of Jan 1 which sets an output target 1.7 million barrels per day lower than October 2018 levels, with Saudi Arabia and Russia making almost half the additional reductions between them. In a surprise move, the bloc also announced that several participating countries, "mainly Saudi Arabia", would make additional voluntary cuts bringing the overall cut to more than 2.1 million barrels per day. World oil prices surged in response, with US benchmark WTI and its European counterpart Brent both rising two percent in an initial reaction before settling down at levels around 1.3 per cent higher on the day in the late European afternoon. On Thursday, a meeting of OPEC … [Read more...] about OPEC agrees oil output cuts after much ‘brain squeezing’

Fossil fuel groups ‘destroying’ climate talks: NGOs
Tens of thousands marched in the Spanish capital Madrid to demand climate action at the UN talks (AFP / OSCAR DEL POZO) A day after tens of thousands marched in the Spanish capital demanding climate action, seven environmental groups raised concerns to AFP over the role of fossil fuel representatives at the COP25 summit. Under the 2015 Paris Agreement, nations agreed to limit global warming to "well below" two degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit) and as close to 1.5C as possible. The UN's top science panel says that 1.5C would require a radical drawdown in fossil fuel usage. Delegates are gathered in Madrid negotiating how to implement the Paris pledges. The summit was moved at short notice after domestic unrest forced original host Chile to cancel. Spanish energy giants Endesa and Iberdrola stepped in to sponsor the conference, which brings together more than 20,000 negotiators, scientists, NGOs and journalists from around the world. AFP has been told that each company paid 2 … [Read more...] about Fossil fuel groups ‘destroying’ climate talks: NGOs
