Traffic accidents are by no means abnormal in the country, but the case this time has stirred up heated debate, with many lawyers, experts, and the public entering a war of words over who or what is to blame for the accident. Friday's Tale Stressful environment Son Nguyen Friday, Mar 2, 2018,22:06 (GMT+7) Stressful environmentSon Nguyen The proposed scheme by the Ministry of Finance to raise the environment tax on fuels from this July has been stiffly objected from far and wide, with many experts questioning the ministry’s wisdom in spurring State budget revenue disguised under the environmental cause. Under a draft Government resolution passed around by the ministry for public comment, the tax sum will rise to VND4,000 per liter of petrol from the current VND3,000, while the additional sums on other fuels range from VND500 to VND1,100 a liter. As widely covered in local media in the past several days, such a proposal is wrongly purported, as the underlying target is to replenish the State budget rather than to remedy the environment harmed by the use of fuels. The ministry’s approach, say experts, might also result in adverse impacts on … [Read more...] about Stressful environment

Son Nguyen Friday, Apr 7, 2017,06:55 (GMT+7) Low-flying option?Son Nguyen The Ministry of Transport is now facing a tough choice: whether to advocate competition in the civil aviation industry to benefit the public by refusing proposals to impose a floor airfare, or to curb competition by siding with national flag carrier Vietnam Airlines and its affiliate Jetstar Pacific. It is tough because the two State-owned carriers want a floor air ticket price set to ensure profitability, but taking this option means putting the public interests at stake, let alone it goes against the basic rules of the market economy. Such a dilemma, so to say, has stolen the spotlight in local media these days. In their proposals sent to the ministry, both Vietnam Airlines and Jetstar Pacific call for a floor airfare as a cushion in the fierce price war against private airline Vietjet Air. The private carrier, meanwhile, … [Read more...] about Low-flying option?
