A low-pressure area in the East Vietnam Sea strengthened into a tropical depression early on Wednesday morning and is forecast to become a storm in the next two to three days. As of 7:00 am on Wednesday, the tropical depression was located 500 kilometers east of Vietnam's Hoang Sa (Paracel) archipelago, according to the National Center for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting. The average wind speed was recorded at 40-50km per hour, while gusts reached up to 75km an hour. The tropical depression is expected to travel northwest in the next 48 hours and pick up strength. By 7:00 am on Friday, it will have been located around 350 kilometers northeast of Hoang Sa, packing winds of 50-60km per hour. It will continue traveling in the northwest direction in the next 48-72 hours and develop into a tropical storm. 7 Vietnamese scientists receive Alexandre Yersin award 2021
The Swiss - Vietnamese Medical Association (HELVIETMED) announced on Monday the list of seven Vietnamese scientists who had won the Alexandre Yersin Prize for outstanding research achievements in 2021. The first prize was given to Dr. Dang Quang Vinh and his associates in My Duc Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City. The second prize went to Dr. Vuong Ngoc Lan and colleagues at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy at Ho Chi Minh City; Dr. Hoang Khuong Duy and associates at Ton Duc Thang University in Ho Chi Minh City; Dr. Nguyen Lam Vuong and colleagues at Oxford University Clinical Research Unit in Ho Chi Minh City; Dr. Luong Quoc Chinh and colleagues at Bach Mai Hospital in Hanoi; Dr. Nguyen Minh Nam and colleagues at the Vietnam National University-Ho Chi Minh City. Pham Van Mach to attend Asian bodybuilding competition next month

The An Giang province-born athlete grabbed five world championship gold medals in 2001, 2009, 2010, 2014 and 2017. He also triumphed in the continental competition eight times, taking seven titles in a row from 2004 to 2012, and another in 2014. Vietnam police seize over 1.3 tonnes of drugs in year’s first half
Police in Vietnam solved more than 10,000 drug-related cases in the first six months of 2022, confiscating upwards of 1.3 metric tons of narcotics of various types. Major General Nguyen Van Vien, head of the Investigation Police Department on Drug-related Crimes under the Ministry of Public Security, on Tuesday reported about the result of the unit’s crime fighting efforts in this year’s first half. Anti-drug police nationwide dealt with more than 10,000 cases during this period, arresting over 16,000 suspects and confiscating 397 kilograms of heroin, 838 kilograms of synthetic drugs, and 71 kilograms of marijuana, Vien elaborated. Hanoi welcomes over 8.61 million visitors in first half of 2022
About 8.61 million tourists visited Hanoi in the first half of this year, marking a three-time jump over the same period last year, according to the municipal Department of Tourism. Some 211,300 of the visitors are foreigners. The Vietnamese capital city’s total tourism revenue in the January-June period amounted to approximately VND25.2 trillion (US$1.08 billion), more than three times the figure in the first six months of 2021. Local hotels rated 1-5 stars recorded an average occupancy rate of over 30 percent during the period, up 6.11 percent year on year, the Vietnam News Agency reported. Over 4,000 runners join Ben Tre Marathon in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta region
More than 4,000 participants took part in the 2022 Ben Tre Marathon in Ben Tre Province, located in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta region, last weekend. The race was one of the activities held to celebrate the 200th birthday of Vietnamese poet Nguyen Dinh Chieu and his UNESCO recognition as a World Cultural Celebrity, as well as part of the provincial traditional cultural festival.
