Young Vietnamese turn to mortgages, installment plans to secure dream homes
Le Thi Bao Tran, a young white-collar worker in Ho Chi Minh City, has spent the past eight years moving between rented rooms, doing her best to save up enough money to purchase a home of her own. Like other young, white-collar workers who have moved to Ho Chi Minh City to pursue their careers, Tran hopes to eventually purchase a home in the city, but the rising cost of real estate has kept that dream out of reach. A lifelong dream Tran spent her college years moving between rental apartments in Binh Thanh District. At one point, she shared a tiny 10-square-meter apartment with a friend for just VND1.1 million ($47) per month, including utilities. During the dry season, the apartment would heat up like an oven, and the putrid smell from a nearby garbage dump would waft through the windows. "If you closed the door, you could hardly breathe. If you opened the door, you still couldn’t breathe because of the horrible smell," she shared. Things were not much better in the … [Read more...] about Young Vietnamese turn to mortgages, installment plans to secure dream homes

A man in Ho Chi Minh City has spent nearly 16 years collecting reel to reel tape recorders. Pham Quy Long, aka Tuan Akai, now owns a collection of reel to reel tape recorders and turntables worth nearly VND2 billion (U$86,600). Tuan Akai developed his interest in collecting the items after he saw a reel to reel tape recorder at a coffee shop. After asking the café’s owner to buy the recorder several times and being turned down, Tuan Akai insisted on convincing the owner to sell by visiting the venue constantly for three months until the owner finally agreed to sell it for VND6 million. (US$1 = VND 23,037) “I started collecting in 2006, and now have over a thousand devices,” Tuan Akai told Tuoi Tre News . “The emergence of social media has also made it easier for me to collect them. “My recorders were produced by many manufacturers including Akai, Teac, Pioneer, Sony, Studer, Revox and more, but mostly Akai. “That’s also why I got the nickname Tuan Akai.” … [Read more...] about Vietnamese man collects over a thousand reel to reel tape recorders in two decades

Contractors in Mekong Delta provinces struggling with sand shortage
Construction businesses in Dong Thap and An Giang Provinces in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta region are facing a severe shortage of sand supply, which has seriously affected progress of their works. In recent times, numerous barges have been gathering on the Tien River between the two provinces, waiting for taking sand delivery, as many sand mines with limited reserves have reduced mining output while some expired mining licenses have yet to be renewed, as recorded by Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper’s reporters. Currently, sand mining activities in Tien and Hau Rivers take place continuously, but supply is still below demand. The most prominent scene of the sand thirst has been seen in the section of the Tien River spanning An Giang Province’s Tan Cau Town and Dong Thap Province’s Hong Ngu District, where hundreds of barges docked everywhere to wait for receiving sand from sand mining firms. On the Hau River, in the section that connects Chau Phu and Phu Tan Districts of An Giang … [Read more...] about Contractors in Mekong Delta provinces struggling with sand shortage

U.S. FDA approves Eli Lilly’s treatment for type 2 diabetes
The U.S. Food & Drug Administration said on Friday it had approved Eli Lilly's injected drug tirzepatide, which has the brand name Mounjaro, to help improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes. The FDA said Mounjaro, along with diet and exercise, improved blood sugar levels and was more effective than the other diabetes therapies with which it was compared in clinical studies. Mounjaro is designed to activate receptors for hormones involved in blood sugar control. It is administered by injection under the skin once weekly, with the dose adjusted as tolerated to meet blood sugar goals. Lilly reported last month that a late-stage trial of tirzepatide showed that it helped obese patients lose more than 20% of their weight, leading Wall Street to boost sales forecasts for the drug. Analysts currently project 2026 sales of tirzepatide to reach $4.7 billion, according to Refinitiv. Similar diabetes drugs include Novo Nordisk's Ozempic, which is also approved by … [Read more...] about U.S. FDA approves Eli Lilly’s treatment for type 2 diabetes
