"Not just this game but every game is challenging. There was a certain pressure in the semifinals and fortunately the team were able to overcome it. Of course, there are still many shortcomings, but this is still an opportunity for the team to improve. Overall, my players have given their best. As the head coach, I want to thank them and the fans for supporting us," Park said in a conference after the game on Thursday. Vietnam were rated higher than Malaysia, but they had trouble finding a way through the opponent’s solid defense and only sealed victory with the goal of Nguyen Tien Linh in extra time. This has happened a few times in the group stage when Vietnam faced defensive teams like Philippines and Myanmar. "I always want the players to follow through with my strategy and the game to go as planned. But it’s football and sometimes things don’t go the way we want. The players also tried to follow the tactics. Nonetheless, result is the most important thing. Now we have to focus … [Read more...] about Coach Park thanks players after hard-fought SEA Games semifinal against Malaysia

Defending champions Vietnam beat Malaysia 1-0 at Viet Tri Stadium in northern Phu Tho Province on Thursday night to set up an exciting Southeast Asian (SEA) Games men’s football final against archrivals Thailand. The game needed two extra 15-minute halves after regulation time to decide who will play the finale against the Thais, who also defeated Indonesia 1-0 after 120 minutes in the other semifinal earlier the same day. The hosts came into the tie having not conceded a single goal in the group stage and put more pressure on Malaysia in the first half after the first 10 cagey minutes. Malaysia had a shot on target from close range after a corner was half cleared, but Vietnamese goalkeeper Nguyen Van Toan was able to smother the effort easily. Nguyen Tien Linh almost opened the scoring in the 27th minute as he ran down and faced Malaysian keeper Azri Ghani, but his shot drifted wide of the far post. Linh missed another chance in the 42nd minute as he was in a convenient … [Read more...] about Vietnam defeat Malaysia to set up men’s football final against Thailand at 31st SEA Games

"I'm proud of the Malaysia players; they fought until the end," he said after the game in Phu Tho's Viet Tri Stadium. "Malaysia’s strategy was effective for nearly 120 minutes. The players also gave all they got. It’s hard to accept defeat this way, but we have to look at the fact that Vietnam are the strongest team in this tournament." Despite having several players just returning from injuries, Malaysia played solidly and took the game into extra time. In the 111th minute they conceded a goal from Nguyen Tien Linh's header, and could not find an equalizer in the remaining time. Maloney said: "Malaysia conceded from a mistake by the goalkeeper. Can't blame him because he has just returned from injury. We also didn't have the best lineup for this game. I appreciate Vietnam's strategy but am also satisfied with the performance by Malaysia." Although failing to make it to the final, Malaysia had a fairly successful tournament, remaining unbeaten in the group stage.
