Satellites monitor Brazil's Amazon, enabling authorities to catch deforestation gangs in the act AFP/NELSON ALMEIDA For three decades, a group of researchers have been monitoring forest clearing, agriculture and land use thanks to satellites orbiting the Earth and beaming images to Brazil's National Institute for Space Research (INPE). The center is located in Brazil's southeastern city of Sao Jose de Campos, far from the Amazon. But the thousands of satellite images sent to deforestation monitors give a pretty good idea of what?s going on in the forest on a daily basis. "It's the only project in the world that does monitoring on this scale," program coordinator Claudio Almeida told AFP during a visit to the center, located near the mega-city of Sao Paulo. "All of the European Union would fit into the Amazon with a bit left over. So monitoring this means you have to be on top of remote sensing technology," he said. BORN UNDER DICTATORSHIP The program is the government's main way of … [Read more...] about Brazil keeps eye on Amazon deforestation with satellites

As at the end of the second quarter of 2018, total stock in Ho Chi Minh City’s office market increased to 1,945,000 sq m, with overall Grade A and B occupancy rates standing at a high of above 95 per cent. The overall rental rate is expected to continue its upwards trend with support from healthy demand and increased quality in future supply. A large volume of high-quality Grade B supply is also projected to be completed by 2020 and will likely put pressure on Grade A in the future, especially long-standing Grade A projects with deteriorating construction quality. Around $450 million was spent on Sochi's Fisht Olympic Stadium in Sochi AFP/Mladen ANTONOV ONE MILLION EXPECTED There won't be an "Oranje" army in Russia, because the Dutch failed to qualify, but there will still be the clapping Icelanders, the chanting English and the distinctive personalities of the supporters of the other 29 visiting countries. The differing languages, songs, flags and fan cultures of the world will energise the streets of Russia's host cities until the middle of July. The figure of one million seems to have been reached by a surprisingly unscientific manner. FIFA has deducted the number of tickets sold to Russians, 872,578, from the two million it says have been sold in total. The biggest demand, outside the host nation, has come from the United States, whose team failed to qualify, with 86,710 sold. Then comes Brazil (71,787), Colombia (64,231) and Germany (60,457). The English are not even in the top ten. Russia's objective, organising committee chief Alexei … [Read more...] about What sort of welcome will World Cup visitors get in Russia?
