Annual blood donation event held in Hanoi Vice President Nguyen Thi Doan beat a ceremonial drum to officially launch an annual blood donation drive, known as the Red Spring Festival, in Ha Noi yesterday. Addressing the gathering, Deputy Health Minister Nguyen Thi Xuyen highlighted the remarkable achievements of the blood donation movement in Viet Nam over the past two decades, with more than 8.2 million units of blood collected and the number of donors increasing every passing year. According to Dr Nguyen Anh Tri, head of the festival's organising board, in addition to easing blood shortages after the Lunar New Year holiday, the event, with its message of "Sharing red blood, giving hope," will help raise public awareness about the need to donate blood. This year's drive is expected to collect between 6,000 and 7,000 units of blood from 10,000 donors. It is being held in almost all localities nationwide until March 15. Construction of Long Thanh International Airport is urgent: transport ministry The construction of Long Thanh International Airport in the southern province of Dong Nai is urgent and necessary, Deputy Minister of Transport Nguyen Hong Truong said, mainly due to Ho Chi Minh City’s Tan Son Nhat International Airport being overloaded. In a meeting in HCM City on October 16, Truong said Tan Son Nhat Airport was running at maximum capacity, accommodating 20 million passengers in 2013, and needed to be expanded to cater for 50 million passengers a year. He predicted the airport would be overcrowded by 2016 or 2017. To increase the airport’s capacity to 50 million passengers per year would require investments of at least 9.1 billion USD and approximately 140,000 households would be displaced, while the surrounding transport infrastructure would not be able to cope with the influx in traffic, he added. Nestle invests an additional US$37 mil in Vietnam Familiar food and drink maker Nestle just announced it is pumping more than US$37 million into expanding its MILO factory at the AMATA Industrial Park in Binh An, Vietnam. Nestle Vietnam Co. Ltd on October 9 said the planned expansion in Bien Hoa City, Dong Nai province should create more than 50 jobs bringing the total number of employees at the location to 304. The company currently has invested over US$450 million in three processing plants in Vietnam, a company representative announced, adding it also operates three plants in Bien Hoa, Long Binh and AMATA industrial parks.
