Bargain hunters break four-day losing streak on VN Index (25-07-2007) HA NOI — The VN Index yesterday increased slightly, breaking its four-day losing streak, as investors went bargain hunting on low- and mid-cap stocks. The index rose 0.33 per cent to 982.43 points with turnover up substantially to 7.4 million shares worth VND765.77 billion. "On a daily basis, the index won’t change much unless there is some big piece of breaking news. However, today’s marginal gain and the pick up in trading volume are good signs for the market," said Vu Duc Nghia, CEO of Bien Viet Securities. He added that mid-range stocks were the order of the day, with the likes of Fimex (FMC) gaining 0.81 per cent to VND62,500 a share. Investors yesterday also shifted their assets between sectors with petroleum stocks benefiting. ‘ASEAN Today’ TV program debuts in October
A new TV program ‘ASEAN Today’ featuring stories on people and places in the ASEAN countries is being produced by Indonesia’s Metro TV news channel and will be aired from October 30. The 30-minute global program on Indonesia’s first 24 hour news channel is expected to deliver breaking news as well as cover news stories of the region and broadcast entertainment programs provided by channels in the 10 ASEAN countries. Twitter, Bloomberg team up for streaming news channel

Khoi set a new national record in the boys' U18's 100m backstroke category with a time of 56.61sec, beating the old record of 57.92. The HCM City-born swimmer also took the lead in the 200m medley, with a time of 2:04.73, defeating the old record of 2:06.14. At the 2014 Asian Games, Khoi swam in the individual backstroke and medley events. He qualified in the preliminaries of the 400m medley, completing this events in seventh position and broke his national record with a time of 4:24.54. Fire breaks out at Thong Nhat Printing Company
The warehouse of the Thong Nhat Printing JSC was destroyed completely after the fire. — Photo dantri.com.vn HA NOI (VNS) — A fire gutted more than 100 square metres of a warehouse and reams of waste paper at the Thong Nhat Printing Joint Stock Company on Nguyen Tuan Street. The fire started at 11am on today at the factory located in the Thanh Xuan District of Ha Noi, with the smoke from the blaze infusing the air with a burning smell. The fire broke out near a petrol station, which scared residents. As soon as they received the news, the Ha Noi Fire Prevention and Control Police dispatched 10 fire fighting trucks, with hundreds of fire-fighters to the scene. The fire was put out at around 1pm with the help of residents in the surrounding areas. No one was hurt by the fire, but the local police are investigating the cause of the fire. Construction of Bến Thủy II Bridge starts today
At the ground-breaking ceremony, Deputy PM Nguyễn Sinh Hùng stressed that the construction of Bến Thuỷ II Bridge over the Lam River mainly aims to upgrade the transportation network along National Road 1A, focusing on the section from Vinh City (Nghệ An Province) to Nghi Xuân District (Hà Tĩnh Province). The bridge will have the total length of 2,940m and the width of 25m, including 4 lanes for high-speed motorized vehicles to run as fast as 80km/h. The second goal of the construction is to lure more investment into the Northern part of the central region in order to facilitate its socio-economic development. HCM City collects meager road maintenance fee revenue from bike owners HCMC has collected total road maintenance fee revenue of VND1.7 billion (over US$76,000) from motorcycle owners this year, according to the city’s Department of Transport. The amount has been paid by motorcycle owners in districts 4, 9, 11, Phu Nhuan, Thu Duc and Binh Chanh. Meanwhile, many districts in the city have yet to implement the fee collection though the HCMC People’s Council earlier backed the municipal government’s proposal to collect the fee. Bui Xuan Cuong, director of the department, told a review meeting on socio-economic performance in the city last week that the city will continue to collect the fee in the remaining months of this year and plans to stop it early next year.
