Tet gifts

With the spirit of "Stronger Together" for this year’s Tet, SABECO is honoured to collaborate with the Vietnam General Confederation of Labour (VCGL) and the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union (HCYU) to roll out the “Together We Make Tet” programme, which is part of its Bia Saigon Tet campaign. The initiative will assist selected communities by allowing them to return to their respective hometowns to celebrate with their relatives and welcome in 2023. The programme not only intends to help struggling localities but also to recognise those who have helped the government and the people of Vietnam to recover from the economic downturn. According to Director of the municipal Department of Tourism Dang Huong Giang, the festival has contributed to promoting love for the Vietnamese traditional costume. The 3-day event featured an Ao Dai Music Festival, a Creative Ao Dai Design contest for students, exhibition spaces, miniatures and 50 booths introducing products of artisans, designers, travel businesses, hotels, and tourism establishments from Hanoi, Hue, and Ho Chi Minh City. In the spotlight were a parade of Ao Dai by the Hanoi Women's Union involving 1,000 participants, a street Ao Dai show by 300 businesswomen and 200 children from around the country, and an art performance combined with an Ao Dai fashion show presented by 100 Hanoi students. Nguyen Quoc Hung, 40, who has worked for garment maker C.T. Vina in Tan Thuan Export Processing Zone in HCMC for 11 years, and some of his colleagues have had their job contracts suspended since early October. He does not go to the factory and is not paid his salary, but since his contract is still valid, he is not eligible for unemployment benefits. Besides, it is difficult for him to get a new job. Hung said employers do not want to recruit him, fearing he would quit if C.T. Vina tells him to return to work when it receives new orders. To support his family, Hung works as a motorbike taxi driver but gets few customers. He wants to quit his job at the garment company, but if he does so he will not be compensated for the termination of the contract. Besides, the monthly salary of nearly VND8 million (US$320) is a large sum of money for him. Japanese auto part maker Yazaki EDS Vietnam wants 500 workers, Vietnamese food producer LC Foods wants 200 and South Korean garment firm ASG Vina wants 100, Luu The Thuan, head of the province Confederation of Labor’s propaganda department, said Monday. Pham Thi Tuyet Nhung, chairwoman of the Yazaki trade union, said the company’s plants in some other countries have been hit hard by Covid and so the Vietnam factory has recently received a lot of orders. The company, which produces electrical wires used in automobiles, is offering new workers a basic monthly salary of VND5.13 million (US$214) and a total monthly income of around VND8 million, she said. Thuan said the confederation has introduced job seekers to nearly 40 companies, and vacancies could be found on its website at congdoanbinhduong.org.vn and Facebook page. The fair, the first of its kind in Vietnam, is expected to bring together more than 500 booths and attract more than 6,000 buyers from the US, Europe, Asia and other parts of the world. When Huu Duc first started working remotely over a year ago because of Covid, he found it to be a miserable experience. Now he finds working from home "heaven on earth." The 28-year-old, who works as a video editor, now wakes up at 8 a.m. every day, eats breakfast and drinks coffee before sitting down at his desk to start working at 10 a.m. Before the pandemic he had "never dreamed" of living and working like this. Then he often had to wake up at 5 a.m. to cook and make lunch before commuting 15 km to get to work in Hanoi's Thanh Xuan District before 7 am. But everything changed when he found a freelance job after his company temporarily shut down because of the pandemic.
