HA NOÂI — Military-run telecom group Viettel made its debut in Ha Noi on Tuesday, becoming the eighth economic group of Viet Nam and the first group set up by the Ministry of Defence. The Viettel Group was established pursuant to Decision No 2079/QD-TTg, dated December 14, 2009, issued by the Prime Minister. The wholly State-owned group operates in the form of a mother-and-child company, with a charter capital of VND50 trillion (US$2.7 billion). It engages in multiple fields, with telecom and information technology being its key business. In addition, Viettel is allowed by the Government to research and produce hardware and software, telecom and electronic equipment and military information technology. Telecom group launches new technology base
HA NOI — The Viet Nam Post and Telecom Group (VNPT) on Sunday installed a Base Transceiver Station (BTS) to provide broadband internet and television services using Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology. According to the VNPT, the new BTS is the first of its kind in Viet Nam and Southeast Asia to apply this technology, which allows customers to access the internet and online entertainment services at a speed of 60Mbps. The trial run for the LTE BTS is expected to be completed in two weeks in time to serve the ASEAN Business and Investment Summit scheduled for October 26-28 in Ha Noi. Chinese telecom groups hesitate to do business in Vietnam
VietNamNet Bridge – Chinese network operators really want to expand their business to Vietnam and other South East Asian markets, but they are fearful of the cutthroat competition in the Vietnamese market. While Chinese telecom equipment companies have been cementing their firm positions in South East Asian markets, their fellow countrymen in the telecommunication field dare not enter the markets because of the stiff rival in the markets, especially in Vietnam, according to China Daily. Big telecom groups join the OTT battle
VietNamNet Bridge – Some telecom groups are preparing to provide OTT service on 3G network, which allows the connection from phones, computers to mobile phones. Analysts believe that the OTT battle may turn to a new branching road. However, it is still unclear if this is a 100 percent Vietnamese product, or a Vietnamized product. Sources said that more OTT brands may turn up in the market in some more months. Opinions from the well informed circle said Viettel, a big guy in the telecom sector, would join the battle. Over the last two years, the military telco has spent a lot of money on developing apps, with the “powerful” workforce of 1,400 workers.
