Vietnamese universities soar up global sustainable development ranking

HCMC-based Ton Duc Thang University jumped 17 places from last year to 165th on the list of 780 most sustainable educational institutes in the world for 2019 while province rivals Tra Vinh University soared 35 spots to 221st. The metric, launched in 2010, grades universities on their setting and infrastructure, energy efficiency and climate change, waste treatment management, water usage, transportation system, as well as education and research programs. Ton Duc Thang University scored high in education and research while Tra Vinh University impressed with its transportation system and energy efficiency. An initiative of the University of Indonesia, the ranking aims to draw the attention of university leaders and stakeholders to combating climate change and resource conservation by assessing current conditions and policies. Urbanisation poses challenges to VN’s sustainable development

Vietnam has witnessed a rapid pace of urbanisation since the late 90s The remark was made by Associate Professor Architecture Pham Thuy Loan, deputy director of the Vietnam National Institute of Architecture at a seminar on urban design and development in Hanoi on November 27. The seminar was held among a series of events within “Danish Week – Sustainable and Livable Cities”. According to the Urban Development Department under the Ministry of Construction, Vietnam has witnessed rapid urban development with the number of cities increasing from 629 in 1999 to 819 in 2018. The urban coverage is now 38.3 percent compared to 19.6% in 1999. The Government’s plan targets 934 cities by 2025 and more than 1,000 cities after 2050. Aviation sector aims for sustainable development and healthy competition

Viet Nam is among a handful number of countries that have been able to maintain a perfect safety record for airlines for over two decades. — VNA Photo Sustainable development and a level playing field for all are two important objectives for Viet Nam’s aviation sector, said policymakers and industry experts at a conference in Ha Noi on Wednesday. The sector has maintained a 15.8 per cent per annual growth rate during the last 10 years, an impressive feat especially considering it has not suffered any incidents that resulted in lives being lost, said Deputy Minister of Transport Le Anh Tuan. Tuan said the industry has been a key driver for economic growth and has helped expand commercial and cultural exchanges between Viet Nam and the world. Hanoi attracts most investment in 11 months

(Photo: kinhtedothi.vn)   Hanoi (VNA) - Hanoi attracted the most foreign direct investment (FDI) in Vietnam during the first 11 months of this year with 7 billion USD, accounting for nearly a quarter of the total, according to the Hanoi Department of Planning and Investment. This figure was higher than the 6.3 billion USD registered in the same period last year. Total registered investment capital for new projects and additions to existing projects reached about 2.1 billion USD, including 1.6 million USD for 788 new projects and 580 million USD for 160 existing projects. During the 11 months, foreign investors poured 5.3 billion USD into Hanoi through capital contributions and share purchases. VEPG addresses key policy development processes for energy sector

The highlight of this high-level meeting was the presentation of the VEPG Progress Report 2019 and the approval of the report by the VEPG chair and co-chairs. The report analysed the progress in the implementation of the 40 policy recommendations formulated by the five VEPG Technical Working Groups (TWGs) and adopted at the VEPG's second high-level meeting on November 26, 2018 Deputy Miniter of Industry and Trade Dang Hoang An emphasised the persistent challenges in the energy sector that require joint efforts and support in 2020 and beyond. “The Vietnamese energy sector is of key importance for the development of the Vietnamese economy and the welfare of the people.
