Despite a hike on export turnover, the average export price drops 9.6% in the first seven months of 2022. Illustration. (Photo: VNA) Hanoi (VNA) – Vietnam exported roughly 4.08 million tonnes of rice in the first seven months of 2022 to earn over 1.99 billion USD, up 17.3% and 6%, respectively, against the same period last year, customs data shows. Despite a hike on export turnover, the average export price dropped 9.6% during the period to 488.9 USD per tonne. It is likely that rice prices will not increase in the coming time as a result of low demand and abundant supply from major exporters. Generally, the market is currently weak, with low purchasing power, said Nguyen Van Don, Director of Viet Hung Co., Ltd, a food exporter based in the Mekong Delta province of Tien Giang. Since the start of this year, Vietnam mostly exported to the Philippines while shipments to China declined significantly. Exports to other markets, though stable, remained small, he … [Read more...] about Rice exports up but prices down in seven months

While 2020 was one of the warmest years on record globally, Vietnam has just gone through another historical year of climate extremes. Last November was also decisive for the future of the planet as countries officially submitted their climate pledges at the COP26 climate summit. Dao Xuan Lai, head of Climate Change and the Environment at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Vietnam We see a skyrocketing demand for natural resources while witnessing the collapse of functioning ecosystems. You only need to drive a couple of hours outside of Hanoi towards Ninh Binh province with its iconic limestone clasts, synonymous with the beauty of northern Vietnam, to see these emblematic features being devoured by machinery to be used for stone mining and cement production. By 2050, global demand for materials such as plastics, steel, or cement is projected to increase by a factor of 2-4. More than 50 per cent of the world’s emissions can be traced back to our … [Read more...] about Partnerships key to green transition

Ho Chi Minh City’s foreign enclaves settle into ‘new normal’

August 19, 2022 by tuoitrenews.vn Leave a Comment

Since Vietnam officially declared the COVID-19 pandemic under control earlier this year, foreign enclaves in Ho Chi Minh City have, once again, begun to bustle, with old stores resuming their operations and new shops opening every day in commercial spaces that sat unoccupied for months on end. Once Vietnam dropped its on-arrival COVID-19 testing requirement for foreign travelers and reopened its international air routes in mid-May, the number of foreigners entering the country began to increase, paving the way for foreign enclaves in Ho Chi Minh City to return to their pre-pandemic life. In Tan Phong Ward, District 7, home to a significant portion of the South Korean community in Ho Chi Minh City, many stores that shut down between late 2020 and early 2022 are once again open for business, and new shops are moving into commercial spaces that have sat empty for months. Kim Yong Min, a South Korean national living in District 7, shared that his eyeglasses stores, which mainly … [Read more...] about Ho Chi Minh City’s foreign enclaves settle into ‘new normal’

Lockdown in Nha Trang leaves beach town desolate

The roundabout in downtown Nha Trang, a top beach destination in the central province of Khanh Hoa, stands idle, allowing a breath of fresh air to pass through the usually congested intersection. Since July 9, the 252-square-kilometer beach town of over 500,000 people entered a 14-day social distancing campaign under government Directive 16, which bans gatherings of more than two people in public and asks people to only leave home for emergencies, buying food and medicine, along with working in factories, production facilities and businesses involved in "essential" goods and services. April 2 Square in front of the 12-kilolometer-long beach on Tran Phu Street is virtually deserted, contrary to crowded scenes during previous holidays. The central square, surrounded by luxury hotels and high-rise buildings, is one of the iconic spots in town. A sanitation worker cleans up the deserted coast along Tran Phu Street, a … [Read more...] about Lockdown in Nha Trang leaves beach town desolate
