Local Lowdown (06-04-2007) Australia launches public speaking contest HA NOI — Australia Education International (AEI) in Viet Nam has launched a speaking contest titled Study in Australia-Investigating the Potentialities. To take part, entrants aged 16-18 must submit a VCD recording of themselves delivering a speech with the theme: How Would You See Yourself In the Next Five Years, before April 20. The best eight entrants will go through to the finals where two will be selected to receive awards. The finals will be held on May 12 in Ha Noi and May 13 in HCM City and will be broadcast live on Viet Nam Television’s VTV2 channel and HCM City’s HTV channel. By Kieu Giang in HCMC The University of Cambridge’s ESOL Examinations has launched its English speaking contest 2011-2012 to find the best speakers in English in Vietnam and Asia. In Vietnam, the contest is open for students from 16 to 22 with good results in the FCE (First Certificate in English) by Cambridge ESOL in 2011. Cambridge ESOL will choose the 10 highest scores in the FCE to enter the national final round. The first prize winner will represent Vietnam to compete with nine other Asian competitors in the Asia Region International Final competition. The national prizes are three month and five month courses at PSB Academy and PSB College in Singapore, HP laptops and English learning materials by Cambridge Publishers. City student excels at English-speaking contest in U.K. By Kieu Giang in HCMC Trinh Hoang Nam, 16, from HCMC-based Asian International School was named runner-up at the Cambridge English Best Young Speaker from Asia Competition held at Cambridge University in the U.K. Nam defeated contestants from China, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Indonesia to win a scholarship for the Graduate Certificate in International Business offered by the University of Tasmania in Australia. Nam was also the youngest contestant among the nine finalists. “If you want to improve your English you should practice speaking English even at home to promote your self-confidence,” Nam said. His upcoming target is to achieve the CPE (Certificate of Proficiency in English) by Cambridge ESOL.This year’s winner was Indian student Sruthi Vijayachandran, 25, who has a Masters degree in Public Relations. Aston names winners of English speaking contest in Can Tho Huynh Kim By Huynh Kim - The Saigon Times Daily Aston Vietnam, an international English center under Aston Education Group, has announced winners of an English speaking contest for elementary school children at its center in the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho. Thirty finalists competed in topics about family, friends, school, pets and favorite activities. First prize winner in the category for second and third graders went to Thai Pham Khanh Tam of Le Quy Don Elementary School. Huynh Ngoc Minh Khue from Nguyen Du Elementary School won first prize in the category for fourth and fifth graders. The value of first prize is VND18 million, including a one-year scholarship to learn English at Aston Can Tho. Hanoi Times – A Korean speaking contest was held in Hanoi yesterday to strengthen the relationship between Vietnam and Korea in the field of culture and promote learning and teaching Korean language in Vietnam. The contest was held by the Kumho Asiana Vietnam Scholarship and Cultural Fund. Twenty Vietnamese contestants who are students from eight universities of the whole country presented a speech in the final round of the first Korean speaking contest in Vietnam. Along with the speaking contest, Korean singing contest also attracted many students to register. Five contestants who have beautiful voices competed in the final round.
