Tran Luong Hoan’s family in Thanh Hung Commune, Dien Bien City, handed over a 10-kilo pig-tailed macaque which was bought from a person earlier.

Ha Giang (VNA) – Forest rangers in the northern mountainous province of Ha Giang have been making efforts to preserve the Tonkin snub-nosed monkey ( Rhinopithecus avunculus ), one of the rarest primate s in the world.

There are only about 200 such monkeys in the world, with most of them being in Ha Giang.

In 2002, a population of 60 individuals was spotted in the Khau Ca special-use forest in Vi Xuyen and Bac Me districts of Ha Giang province. Another population of 30-60 was found six years later in the Tung Vai area in Quan Ba district.

Local forest rangers have coordinated with Fauna & Flora International (FFI) in a preservation project for the primates, with a range of pragtical activities conducted.

They have also joined hands with the People’s Committees of the districts to promote preservation measures among 5,000 local residents, who have committed to not hunt the monkeys.

Bui Van Dong, head of the provincial forest ranger department, said the preservation work requires more support and responsibility from departments, agencies, organisations, and the community.

It was reported that the number of Tonkin snub-nosed monkeys in the Khau Ca forest has grown from 60 in 2002 to 144-160. In the Cao-Ta-Tung protective forest area, however, individuals have fallen to just 20.

Given this, FFI said preservation is of special significance, and stressed the need to create different populations of the primate as well as diverse gene sources./.

Da Nang (VNS/VNA) – Authorities of Son Tra district, in cooperation with the Centre of Biodiversity Conservation and GreenViet, have started researching the protection of the rhesus macaque monkey to drive troupes of monkeys back to the Son Tra Nature Reserve in the central city of Da Nang.

Director of GreenViet, Tran Huu Vy, said the research, which began last December, has been tracking the habitat and population of the monkeys as well as food chains to limit risks of conflict with human activities.

He said the research was urgent as many flocks of monkey had left their habitat in the primary forest to seek food from tourists and offerings at temples and pagodas at the foot of Son Tra mountain recently. Monkeys had conflicts with people when local residents and visitors tried to feed them.

Monkeys even broke into kitchens and fruit farms in the reserve, raising risks of transmitting viruses between the primates and people.

Despite serious warnings to not feed monkeys in the reserve, some local residents and tourists have given monkeys fruit, snacks and bread in the reserve.

Local rangers said they believed a group of 30 monkeys that used to gather by the Linh Ung Pagoda to seek food from visitors returned to their natural habitat during COVID-19 social distancing orders between April and July.

However, the monkeys reappeared at some destinations to get food from tourists during the Tet (Lunar New Year) holidays.

Vy, a biodiversity conservationist, said it was important to stop feeding monkeys at tourism sites and long-term research should be built-in with the conservation and protection of the monkeys.

Research by a group of conservationists from GreenViet and Da Nang University’s Science and Education College found there were about 50 herds of rhesus macaques with more than 500 individuals living in the reserve.

Biologists also warned that monkeys living in the reserve could break into resorts, causing trouble for tourists and management if local authorities do not have any effective solutions for the conservation and protection of the primates.

According to Son Tra-Ngu Hanh Son forest protection sub-department, some traffic accidents occurred in the area in recent years when cars and motorbikes hit monkeys crossing the road.

Last year, a baby monkey was grabbed by a local man at Linh Ung Pagoda, while two other monkeys were killed by household dogs at farms in the reserve.

Six monkeys were killed by motorcyclists in 2015-2017, and two cases of illegal hunting were uncovered in the area, with three red-shanked douc langurs killed for money.

The rhesus macaque is listed as Least Concern in the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)’s red list of threatened species.

The 4,400ha reserve is home to more than 1,300 red-shanked douc langurs – an endangered primate species listed by IUCN – and more than 1,000 plant and 370 animal species including 15 flora and 25 fauna species listed as the most threatened species in the world.

It hosts at least 10,000 people each month./.

Doctors, nurses at Quang Ninh field hospital go all out in Covid-19 fight

On the night of Jan. 27, Quang Ninh recorded one of Vietnam’s first Covid-19 community transmissions in nearly two months: a man who works at Van Don International Airport. The man, eventually designated “Patient 1553”, was taken to Hanoi’s National Hospital for Tropical Diseases for treatment.

Those who had been in contact with the patient were quarantined at the No. 2 field hospital in Ha Long, with dozens of cases subsequently confirmed infected.

Every morning, doctors and nurses at the field hospital convened with peers across the country through a telehealth system to help diagnose and treat Covid-19 patients.

The hospital has 250 beds, along with state-of-the-art equipment for receiving, diagnosing and treating Covid-19 patients and suspected cases.

Over 100 medical workers and other employees are working at the hospital.

Doctors treat Covid-19 patients twice a day while wearing protective suits.

Nurse Nguyen Khac Sang, 34, has become a barber during his time at the hospital.

“We treat Covid-19 patients in three shifts between four teams. When the shifts are over, we have time to take care of ourselves. Some call their families, while others clean up areas across the hospital,” he said.

Ever since Sang joined the frontline fight against Covid-19 in February, his wife and children had to move back to their grandparents in Uong Bi Town, with the mother finding work at a local kindergarten.

“It’s nearly Tet but I cannot be with my family. In the evening, my wife and I often video call each other,” he said.

The treatment ward for Covid-19 patients is frequently disinfected.

Besides traditional diagnoses, doctors also communicate with their patients through the phone to cut costs, as every physical visit would require a new protective suit, priced at about VND1 million ($43.68).

All medical workers would be tested for Covid-19 once a week.

Nguyen Duc Doi, a doctor in the ICU, described the days near the end of January as “dizzying.” At the time, he was working as a Covid-19 screener, when he received wave after wave of new patients. There were days when he alone had to handle 80 people.

“I still had enough strength after the first night, but at the end of the next night fatigue overtook me. My throat went dry and my eyes forced themselves to stay open. I had to get out some times to take a breath and shake my head to stay conscious,” he said.

Doctors and nurses at the field hospital convene with the Quang Ninh Department of Health online.

Ambulances frequently zip in and out of the hospital to deliver Covid-19 patients.

As of Monday morning, Quang Ninh has recorded 47 Covid-19 cases during the new wave that hit late January. Several areas in the province have been put under lockdown to stem the spread of the novel coronavirus.

Over 1,130 wild animals rescued in Việt Nam in 2020

HÀ NỘI — As many as 1,132 wild animals were successfully rescued in Việt Nam last year, according to the Education for Nature Vietnam (ENV), a local NGO focused on the conservation of nature and the environment.

These animals include 436 birds, 362 turtles, 120 monkeys and others.

In particular, in October last year, seven bears held captive in the southern province of Bình Dương were transferred to a sanctuary in Ninh Bình Province, bringing the total number of rescued bears in 2020 to 32.

ENV recorded 2,907 violation cases last year, nearly doubling that of the previous year. Of these, 1,956 cases involved advertising wildlife illegally and 863 of illegal captivity.

It showed that the wildlife trade and consumption continue in Việt Nam, despite the development of the COVID-19 pandemic most likely originating from wildlife along with drastic measures from the government, ENV said.

It also said that 57.1 per cent of 2,216 violation cases reported by residents had been handled.

Each day the ENV’s Wildlife Protection Department received an average of nine reports, compared with 4-5 cases recorded in 2019.

The number of violations reported to ENV per day in 2020 nearly doubled 2019’s figure, proving that the community was increasingly concerned with wildlife protection issues, said Nguyễn Phương Dung, Deputy Director of ENV.

“ENV has succeeded in encouraging the community support authorities in monitoring wildlife violations,” she said.

Dung urged relevant agencies to exert more efforts in raising the success rate of handling violations in 2021.

Since 2005, ENV has operated a hotline to receive reports of unlawful activities relating to wildlife violations through 1800-1522 which is free of charge and email [email protected] After receiving information, ENV staff will transfer it to the relevant authorities to handle the violation and closely follow the process of handling violations until the final results are available. — VNS
