Slight decrease in COVID cases on Monday

The latest numbers bring the total national caseload to 10,698,180 so far. Among the new infections, just two were imported and the rest were domestic. A total of 1,355 new transmissions were detected in the community. The capital city of Hà Nội again recorded the highest number of infections with 437, followed by northern Bắc Ninh Province with 98. First Vietnamese woman reaches summit of Mount Everest

Thaneswar Guragai, manager of Seven Summit Treks, confirmed that Nhã had summited Everest at around 3.30 am local time this morning. A representative from the company congratulated her and highlighted that she is the first Vietnamese woman to reach the summit of Everest, noting that this is a historic achievement for the Vietnamese climbing community. As the high school entrance and graduation exams are starting in a few weeks, final-year students at middle and high schools are as busy as a bee at back-to-back extra classes. Some students leave their extra classes and return home at 9:30 pm every day. Like her fellow students, N., a ninth grader of Tang Nhon Phu B Middle School in Thu Duc City, Ho Chi Minh City, is in crunch time. She has a very busy studying schedule. Vietnam seeks US recognition of local Vietnamese communities as ethnic minority group
Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has asked the Vietnamese Embassy in the U.S. to call on the U.S. government to recognize Vietnamese communities in the country as one of its ethnic minorities. PM Chinh visited the embassy in Washington, D.C. on Saturday as part of his trip to the U.S. to attend the U.S. - ASEAN Special Summit from May 11 to 17, at the invitation of U.S. President Joe Biden. The PM praised the embassy’s efforts in realizing the external policy of the Party and the state, promoting the image of the nation and people of Vietnam, and contributing to fostering the Vietnam – U.S. comprehensive partnership. Two British tourists die in traffic accident
Two British tourists died in a traffic accident in the central city of Hoi An early Monday morning. The area where the accident occured According to a report from Hoi An Police Department, the accident occured at 3.40am when the two visitors were driving a motorbike on Hung Vuong Street and crashed into an electricity pole. The two, a man and a woman, died on the spot. They were identified as Denver Christopher Marcus, 25, and Thompson Peth May, 24. They are both British citizens. The motorbike was heavily damaged. Police are investigating the cause of the accident. Director of Hoi An Police Department, Dinh Xuan Nghi, said that they needed forensic appraisal to define whether the two were driving under influence. Additional 1,550 Covid-19 infections announced on Monday
The number of new Covid-19 infections continued to drop with 1,550 cases recorded on Monday, down 46 cases from the previous day, according to the Ministry of Health. According to the ministry's report, most of the new patients are locally-transmitted cases confirmed in 48 out of 63 localities in the country with some localities seeing the highest numbers including Hanoi (437), Bac Ninh (98), Yen Bai (76), Quang Ninh (75), and Nghe An (64). As of Monday evening, the number of Covid-19 patients in Vietnam has increased to over 10.70 million. The country now stands 12th among 227 countries and territories worldwide in the number of infections. On May 16, an additional 4,723 more patients recovered from the disease, raising the number of recoveries in the country to over 9.35 million.
