Construction businesses in Dong Thap and An Giang Provinces in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta region are facing a severe shortage of sand supply, which has seriously affected progress of their works. In recent times, numerous barges have been gathering on the Tien River between the two provinces, waiting for taking sand delivery, as many sand mines with limited reserves have reduced mining output while some expired mining licenses have yet to be renewed, as recorded by Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper’s reporters. Currently, sand mining activities in Tien and Hau Rivers take place continuously, but supply is still below demand. The most prominent scene of the sand thirst has been seen in the section of the Tien River spanning An Giang Province’s Tan Cau Town and Dong Thap Province’s Hong Ngu District, where hundreds of barges docked everywhere to wait for receiving sand from sand mining firms. On the Hau River, in the section that connects Chau Phu and Phu Tan Districts of An Giang … [Read more...] about Contractors in Mekong Delta provinces struggling with sand shortage

Mekong Delta mitigates saltwater intrusion damages
The Cái Lớn Sluice on the eponymous river in Kiên Giang Province has proved effective in mitigating saltwater intrusion impacts. — VNA/VNS Photo Dương Giang HCM CITY — Proactive prevention measures and “proper” restructuring of crop cultivation in the Cửu Long (Mekong) Delta have proved effective in mitigating saline intrusion in the 2021-22 dry season. With the onset of the rainy season in the delta, the country’s largest rice, fruit and seafood producer, the saltwater intrusion has been declined significantly, local reports say. The delta normally faces saltwater intrusion in the dry season which lasts from December to April, severely impacting agricultural production and the lives of locals. To cope with saltwater intrusion in the just concluded dry season, farmers implemented various prevention measures as advised by local authorities, including building temporary saltwater prevention dams and storing fresh water. Mekong flowing at highest in years but drought feared later
According to Mekong River Commission (MRC), from November 2021 to April 2022 the Lower Mekong River Basin (LMB) was wetter than normal years with rainfall 25 percent above average basin-wide. At Thailand's Chiang Saen, the second uppermost monitoring station in the LMB, the level rose from 1.84 meters on Mar. 2 to 3.25 meters on May 11. The latter figure is lower than the 60-year average until 2021, but notably higher than during the drought years of 2019–21. At the Vientiane station in the Laotian capital, water levels even exceeded the 60-year average. In Cambodia, levels along the stretch from the Stung Treng to Kompong Cham monitoring stations rose by 0.66-2.22 meters, an increase of around 1.5 meters from last year, the MRC said in a statement. The Vietnam National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting (NCHMF) said late last month that the Mekong Delta, where the river reaches the sea, in April received 15-20 percent more water than average. Who is to blame when kids drown?
My father taught me how to swim when I was five. He took two coconuts and secured them together with a cloth to make a makeshift buoy. I used it to keep afloat as I flailed at the water in the middle of a flooded field. When I figured out how to stay afloat, my father took away the coconuts and planted two poles, two meters apart, in the water. I had to swim from one to the other. With each passing day the poles got further apart. One day I was able to swim all the way to the furthest part and make it back to land safely. It was how I and my siblings learned to swim. It was how all the kids in the Mekong Delta did. Our parents were not professional coaches, and merely passed down their experience to their children. Yet I rarely heard of anyone drowning in my hometown. My father said parents started thinking about teaching their children how to swim as soon as they were able to walk. It only takes a small mistake to lose one's life in the waters of the delta. We used to get … [Read more...] about Who is to blame when kids drown?
