Daily aspirin use -- known to reduce the risk of colon cancer -- could also make the disease harder to treat if it does occur, researchers reported Wednesday. The new findings based on mathematical modelling, if confirmed statistically and in the lab, would mean that aspirin's ability to ward off colon cancer may come at an unacceptably high cost, they cautioned. Taking aspirin regularly "has been shown to reduce the incidence (of) a variety of cancers," including of the colon, noted the authors of a study in the Journal of the Royal Society Interface. But at the same time, the drug may render the cancer "more difficult to manage therapeutically," they added. "This indicates a potential trade-off." A growing body of research has shown that daily micro-doses of aspirin taken for at least five years can slash the risk of cancer later in life. Rates of prostate, throat and non-small-cell lung cancer all drop off significantly, with the incidence of colon cancer cut by … [Read more...] about Good and bad news on aspirin and colon cancer: study

Nut-eaters saw a 42 percent lower chance of cancer recurrence than patients who did not eat nuts after completion of their cancer treatment. Eating certain kinds of tree nuts, such as almonds, pecans, walnuts, hazelnuts and cashews, has been linked to a dramatically lower risk of colon cancer recurrence, researchers said Wednesday. The observational study involved 826 patients who had undergone treatment for stage III colon cancer, typically including surgery and chemotherapy. Such patients -- whose cancer has not spread elsewhere in the body -- have a 70 percent chance of surviving three years after treatment. Some 19 percent of patients consumed two or more ounces of all types of nuts per week. These nut-eaters saw a 42 percent lower chance of cancer recurrence -- and a 57 percent lower chance of death than patients who did not eat nuts after completion of their cancer treatment, said the report, released ahead of the American Society for Clinical Oncology (ASCO) annual … [Read more...] about Certain nuts may help ward off return of colon cancer – study
Research has shown that chronic depression and anxiety may help trigger heart disease and stroke - now its links to cancer are being explored. — AFP File Photo Viet Nam News PARIS — People who are frequently depressed or anxious may run a higher risk of dying from certain types of cancer, researchers said on Thursday. Medical records of more than 160,000 adults in England and Wales showed that those describing themselves as psychologically distressed were more likely to succumb to cancer, especially of the colon, prostate and pancreas. Leukaemia and cancer of the oesophagus, or food pipe, were also more elevated among this group, they wrote in the BMJ medical journal. The researchers were cautious in their conclusions, pointing out that a statistical link does not necessarily signify a cause-and-effect relationship between mood and cancer. But the findings add to growing evidence that mental and physical health do not function on separate planes, and that one can … [Read more...] about Does depression boost the risk of cancer death?
A new study finds that ginger may decrease the risk of colon cancer through diminishing the inflammation in the gut, according to media reports Thursday. Prior researches have found that chronicle inflammation in the gut is related to colon cancer, suggesting easing inflammation in intestines might reduce the risk of the cancer, said Suzanna M. Zick, lead author of the study published online in Cancer Prevention Research. Zick, also a naturopathic physician and research associate professor at University of Michigan Medical Center, and her colleagues, assigned 30 volunteers to take pills containing two grams of either placebo powder or ginger root extract, equivalent to about two tablespoons of ground-up raw ginger root. And they recorded the inflammations in the participants' intestines before and after the test period. The researchers found that participants taking ginger pills had 28 percent less inflammation in their intestines after the test. But no difference was found in those … [Read more...] about Ginger may diminish risk of colon cancer
