VietNamNet Bridge – With more than 15 years volunteering for charity projects, Nguyen Tuan Khoi, 34, from HCM City, said he has witnessed hunger first-hand. Warm meal: Foodbank Vietnam helps distribute food to those in need. However, during many trips across Vietnam, he also found so much food being wasted every day in the country. “The idea providing food, which might otherwise be wasted, to those who really need it, inspired me to set up a project helping improve the living conditions of many hungry people,” said Khoi. From this desire, the non-profit Foodbank Vietnam was born. With the support of the government-sponsored Vietnam Red Cross (VCRC), Foodbank Vietnam debuted earlier this year with a pledge to reduce poverty; raise social awareness about saving food; as well as boost connections and coordination between food suppliers and resource centres with charity shelters and organisations for poor and disadvantaged people, project founder Khoi … [Read more...] about Charity fights food waste in Vietnam

In a conference on global refrigeration supply, Appel said that the cooling and freezing technology also helps increase trade among countries. He called for private and public sectors as well as scientists to focus on seeking and implementing strategic and practical measures to reduce food wastefulness in Vietnam and the Southeast Asia. Statistics showed that only 10 percent of foodstuff and farm produce in the world is preserved with cooling and freezing systems. Fighting food waste

April 4, 2017 by robert Leave a Comment

(VOVworld) – It’s estimated that food worth billions of USD is wasted every year while more than 840 million people are starving. The wasted food could feed 2 billion people three meals a day. Many countries have launched campaigns to reduce food waste. Denmark is leading the fight against food waste. It has reduced food waste by 25% since the government launched a national program in 2011 and has invested millions of Krone in food waste reduction initiatives. In 2015, a supermarket chain called WeFood was created to sell stores’ surplus goods at discounted prices. Mobile applications have become another effective tool in reducing food waste in Denmark. One of the most popular apps is Your Local which enables restaurant owners to get rid of food that is close to its expiration date and provide consumers an opportunity to buy food at a fraction of its original price. With more than 85,000 users, Your Local has also reached supermarkets where the amount of food … [Read more...] about Fighting food waste

Dumped food waste threatens environment, human health

June 22, 2013 by robert Leave a Comment

VietNamNet Bridge – Leftover food waste is a threat to our environment and risk to human health, said Nguyen Van Phuoc, President of the Institute of Environment and Natural Resource. When one throws leftover food into garbage bins, some of this may be contaminated with heavy metals and raw sewage which is a risk to human health as food grown uses this contaminated waste and water to germinate. Phuoc affirmed that human waste dumped untreated in water systems greatly contributes to polluting the water source. Results monitored by Vietnam Environment Administration at the end of 2012 found a high presence of fecal coliforms in Saigon, Dong Nai, Nha Be Rivers and in the canal network in urban and suburban districts. One of the main reasons for this pollution was attributed to food waste. Many diners in restaurants in Parkson, Hung Vuong, Nowzone, Co.op Ly Thuong Kiet, and Victory or at wedding parties in Ho Chi Minh City often leave food on their plates. Some restaurants put … [Read more...] about Dumped food waste threatens environment, human health
