Ekkasit Lakkananithiphan, president of Dow Vietnam As one of the prominent companies focusing on green technology, how has Dow Vietnam contributed to the country’s sustainability goals? As a global materials science company, we have primary sustainability goals. The first is to protect the climate, in which we implement and advance technologies to manufacture our products using fewer resources for carbon neutrality by 2050. And to tackle the plastics pollution, our goal is also to stop the waste and focus on investments in key technologies and infrastructure to significantly increase global recycling. By 2030, we aim to have one million metric tons of plastic collected, reused, or recycled globally through direct actions and partnerships. The next goal is to close the plastics loop by enabling all Dow products sold in reusable or recyclable packaging applications by 2035. Avoid unworthwhile investments, try estate taxes, Vietnam advised
At a Saturday conference in Harvard University on Vietnam's development strategy in the 21st century, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh said Vietnam's economy has expanded into the fourth largest economy in ASEAN and among the world's top 12 economies with the largest scale of commerce. The country also takes part in 15 active FTAs, he said. Economist David Dapic said Vietnam taking part in FTAs was a major success. Millions of farmers have moved on to work in factories as a result. But the fact that most materials for production are imported from China is a weakness, he added. When the Covid-19 pandemic broke out, borders were closed and there was commercial tension, Vietnam's exports were affected, Dapic said. Vietnam's trade turnover with the U.S. may reach $100 billion this year. Such a figure might be small for the U.S., but Vietnam should take note to remain in constant communication and avoid being accused of currency manipulation, he advised. Nguyen Thi Hong, head of the … [Read more...] about Avoid unworthwhile investments, try estate taxes, Vietnam advised
‘Weddings in Vietnam seem very aloof to me’
Editor’s note: Valentin Constantinescu wrote to Tuoi Tre News to share his thoughts on his own wedding following our series on things that often ‘shock’ foreigners when it comes to traditional Vietnamese weddings. The Romanian man has lived in Vietnam since 2004 and married his Vietnamese wife in 2018. This piece has been titled, subtitled, and edited by Tuoi Tre News for clarity, consistency, and coherence. Long story short, I met my wife in 2016 in Hanoi. About six months into our relationship, we realized we would be with each other forever. In August 2018, we decided to sign the papers to be legally married in Vietnam. We moved to Ho Chi Minh City shortly after and planned to hold our actual wedding ceremony on September 17, 2021. 17th of September is our anniversary – it’s the day she agreed to be my girlfriend. She chose the year 2021 because it looks cool – 20 and 21 are consecutive numbers. Unfortunately, COVID-19 completely ruined our plans – we lost a … [Read more...] about ‘Weddings in Vietnam seem very aloof to me’

SEA Games: Vietnam advance to semi-finals as Group A winners
Vietnam comfortably beat Timor Leste 2-0 at Viet Tri Stadium in Phu Tho Province on the evening of May 15 to progress into the semi-finals of the 31st SEA Games men’s football event as the Group A winners. Nguyen Van Tung and Ho Thanh Minh were on target after the break as Park Hang-seo’s troops concluded their group-stage campagin at the top with 10 points, one clear of Indonesia. Indonesia’s 3-1 victory over Myanmar earlier on Sunday not only sent coach Shin Tae-yong’s side through to the last four, but also helped Vietnam book a semi-final place regardless of the result of their match against bottom-placed Timor Leste. Given that fact, coach Park Hang-seo decided to rest some key players, including Nguyen Hoang Duc, Nguyen Tien Linh and Do Hung Dung, on the bench and gave the opportunity to the irregular ones. With Timor Leste being the minnows, it came as little surprise when Vietnam promptly took control of the match right after the first whistle. The hosts threatened to … [Read more...] about SEA Games: Vietnam advance to semi-finals as Group A winners
Hunt for human talent for tourism – Vietnam’s new normal: RMIT University
As Vietnam reopens its borders to tourism, attracting, developing and retaining a quality workforce has become the top priority for this industry. With borders reopened and tourism promotion campaigns launched in Vietnam, hotels, tour operators and ancillary service providers across the country might be facing a major problem: shortage of qualified labor. Dr Nuno F. Ribeiro, RMIT University Vietnam During the worst period of the pandemic in 2020-2021, many tourism organizations had to reduce their (experienced) workforce. A report by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism revealed that tourism businesses cut staff by 70-80% in 2020. In 2021, the number of full-time tourism employees was down to 25% of the 2020 level, and about 30% quit their jobs or had their contracts terminated. These workers have either returned to their original employment prior to tourism and hospitality or they have found employment elsewhere. Now a great number of them are … [Read more...] about Hunt for human talent for tourism – Vietnam’s new normal: RMIT University
The freedom of wild swimming
After a near-death swimming incident, Nguyễn Ngọc Khánh realised he didn't know how to swim in natural water and decided to impart the swimming skills to as many people as possible. The experience has helped him find his life's mission. SWIMMING SAVIOUR: Nguyễn Ngọc Khánh, 35, started a network to give free swimming lessons to kids living along the Red River. Photo courtesy of Nguyễn Ngọc Khánh Inner Sanctum: Can you tell us why you initiated this project to teach swimming to children? It came from my own experience. I have only known how to swim properly for the past three years. After a near-drowning incident, I realised I had to learn how to swim all over again. I want to spread this message to as many people as possible; it's an immense disadvantage when you can't swim. You risk your life on waterways or beaches. I see that in the West, swimming is a major skill taught at school, and everyone needs to know. Whereas in Việt Nam, a country with many rivers and a … [Read more...] about The freedom of wild swimming

Contractors in Mekong Delta provinces struggling with sand shortage
Construction businesses in Dong Thap and An Giang Provinces in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta region are facing a severe shortage of sand supply, which has seriously affected progress of their works. In recent times, numerous barges have been gathering on the Tien River between the two provinces, waiting for taking sand delivery, as many sand mines with limited reserves have reduced mining output while some expired mining licenses have yet to be renewed, as recorded by Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper’s reporters. Currently, sand mining activities in Tien and Hau Rivers take place continuously, but supply is still below demand. The most prominent scene of the sand thirst has been seen in the section of the Tien River spanning An Giang Province’s Tan Cau Town and Dong Thap Province’s Hong Ngu District, where hundreds of barges docked everywhere to wait for receiving sand from sand mining firms. On the Hau River, in the section that connects Chau Phu and Phu Tan Districts of An Giang … [Read more...] about Contractors in Mekong Delta provinces struggling with sand shortage
