The Vietnamese swimmer finished first with a time of 4:18.10 to take a gold medal. His new record was more than two seconds better than the 4:20.65 he set at the previous Games in the Philippines. It is also the new national record of Việt Nam. Nguyên was left behind in the first 100m butterfly but he came back in the second lap of backstroke and pulled ahead in the last two laps.
