In the women's 100 m event, Du Y placed 45th out of 55 athletes as she finished her run in 11.95 seconds, not enough to get her to the next round. Y was the only Vietnamese athlete that met the standard for 2022 World Athletics U20 Championships, which takes place from Aug. 1 to 8 in Cali, Columbia. The tournament features 1,533 athletes from 145 countries competing in 45 events. In SEA Games 31 hosted by Vietnam in May, Y finished her run in 11.94 seconds and only placed sixth out of eight athletes in the women's 100 m event. She also placed sixth in the women's 200 meters with a result of 24.50 seconds. Y is considered the successor of pace queen Le Tu Chinh, who is an expert in the 100 m distance. Facing up to some ugly truths about beauty contests
The proliferation of pageants in the country has become a recent topic of discussion/debate. People say that the sheer number of competitions has caused a drop in both the quality of the candidates and entertainment value. Comparisons have even been made to Thi No, a literary character famous for being the polar opposite of beauty in Nam Cao's "Chi Pheo." Over the years, I have come to believe firmly that today’s beauty contests, not just in Vietnam, are inherently flawed. While the concept of beauty pageants has existed for millennia in both the East and the West (known through the Greek myth "Judgment of Paris"), modern beauty pageants as we know them only truly began in America during the early 20th century. The first beauty pageant of the modern times was the Miss America Pageant in 1921. Besides the touted appreciation of female beauty, pageants were a major tourist attraction, enticing people to go to resorts and entertainment centers in America's beach cities at the time. … [Read more...] about Facing up to some ugly truths about beauty contests
UK first to approve Omicron COVID shot with Moderna nod
Britain, the first country to approve a coronavirus vaccine in late 2020, has now also given the first green light to a variant-adapted shot that targets both the original and Omicron version of the virus. The UK medicines regulator (MHRA) gave the so-called bivalent vaccine made by U.S. drug company Moderna conditional approval as a booster for adults on Monday. Later on Monday, the UK's Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) backed the use of the variant-adapted shot in the country's booster campaign starting September. The MHRA's Moderna decision was based on clinical trial data that showed the booster triggered "a strong immune response" against both Omicron (BA.1) and the original virus, it said. Moderna in June said trial data showed that when given as a fourth dose, the variant-adapted shot raised virus-neutralizing antibodies by eight-fold against Omicron. The MHRA also cited an exploratory analysis in which the shot was found to generate a "good … [Read more...] about UK first to approve Omicron COVID shot with Moderna nod

Vietnam chess ace takes down world champion
After losing the first two rounds against the world top six including Levon Aronian and Alireza Firouzja, Liem finally got his first win. Duda, the 2021 FIDE World Cup champion, let Liem claim victory in two games and only managed a draw. In the first game, Liem played white and lost a pawn in mid game. But he was able to trap his opponent’s queen and gain the upper hand, then converted his advantage to a victory. Duda went all out in the second game when he put his knight on the line from the opening. But Liem used it to his advantage and won again after 53 moves. By the third game, Duda couldn’t create an advantage because of Liem's solid defensive style. This game ended up in a draw, with Liem winning 2-1 without needing the fourth game. This victory will be a motivational boost for Liem as he will play chess king Magnus Carlsen in the fourth round on Thursday night. Carlsen is one of only two players to win all games so far at the tournament, alongside Indian prodigy … [Read more...] about Vietnam chess ace takes down world champion
Chess king Carlsen defeats Vietnam chess ace in grand tournament
After drawing the first two games, Carlsen got an advantage when playing white in the third. He decided to use a higher-risk approach and made it more complicated in mid-game. The Norwegian star lost a knight in the endgame, but had three more pawns than Liem, trapping him in defense, and eventually, checkmate. Liem shook his head when he realized his mistake and pushed the surrender button, while Carlsen smiled after the important victory. "I couldn’t find a way to win in that situation, so I tried to trick Quang Liem and succeeded," Carlsen said. With the loss in the third game, Liem had no choice but to win in the last one. However, he once again fell into Carlsen’s trap and lost his queen in mid-game. The round ended with a 3-1 win for Carlsen. In April, at Oslo Esports Cup, Liem beat Carlsen 2.5-1.5. Only Carlsen and Indian prodigy Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa have won all games after four rounds. Liem will face Praggnanandhaa in the fifth round. After four rounds, he … [Read more...] about Chess king Carlsen defeats Vietnam chess ace in grand tournament
