Crackdown on illegal education
HA NOI — The Education and Training Ministry wants individuals or companies that operate illegal education facilities to be fined up to VND100 million (US$5,100) according to a new draft decree. Deputy minister Nguyen Thi Nghia said the old decree on administrative punishments is no longer relevant. The low level of fines and existence of new problems prompted the ministry to draft a new decree. Nghia said the ministry would collect comments from educational institutes, universities and schools on the draft decree until Friday before they submit the document to the Government on September 15. The draft decree, which will replace the Gover-nment's decree on administrative punishments for educational violations, stipulates that offenders who enrol new students without permission from relevant authorities will pay between VND5-10 million ($255-510) in fines. Huge fire destroys rattan shop A huge fire occurred in a rattan shop in district 11 in Ho Chi Minh City at 11.20am on January 18, causing great property loss. No death was reported. The shop was burned out together with a number of motorbikes parked in it. Nearby houses were also damaged. Fire fighters came to the scene immediately and the fire was controlled after one hour. Court jails 27 for gambling The people's court in Cao Bang Province yesterday sent 27 people to prison for organised gambling. According to the court reports, on January 10, 2014, the Cao Bang police raided a guest room in the province and found four people engaging in illegal gambling. They also seized VND742 million (US$34,500) in cash from the site. Visa exemption for foreign citizens Under the Government’s Resolutions No. 46/NQ-CP dated June 18, 2015, citizens from five countries namely the UK, France, Germany, Spain, and Italy enjoy visa exemption from July 1, 2015 to June 30, 2016 for single-entry visits of up to 15 days. The policy will be considered for extension in accordance with Vietnamese law. Currently, Viet Nam is also offering unilateral visa exemption for citizens from the Republic of Korea, Sweden, Japan, Russia, Finland, Norway and Demark.
