The development of intensely hot weather on a large scale in the North and Central regions since mid-June has been causing the national electricity consumption to climb sharply. According to data from the National Load Dispatch Center, at noon on June 21, the national electricity consumption capacity exceeded 45,000 MW for the first time and set a new record high of 45,528 MW. In addition, the electricity consumption capacity of the North alone also hit a new record with a peak capacity of 22,330 MW at noon on June 21. According to the EVN, compared to the average level of the previous week, the peak capacity of the national power system on June 21 has increased by more than 6,500 MW. In the North alone, peak capacity has risen by more than 5,200 MW, or nearly 31% compared to the average of the previous week. Compared to the peak in 2021, the national electricity consumption capacity on June 21 is roughly 3,100 MW higher, and the Northern peak capacity is also nearly 1,400 MW higher. … [Read more...] about EVN warns of electricity failure due to hot weather

Japan swelters as heatwave prompts power crunch warning
Japan's government warned Monday of a power crunch as extreme heat hits the country, with temperature records toppling and Tokyo's rainy season declared over at the earliest date on record. The Tokyo area is facing power crunch warnings amid unseasonably high temperatures. Temperatures of 35 degrees Celsius (95 degrees Fahrenheit) were forecast in Tokyo throughout Monday, and the mercury is not expected to drop below 34 until Sunday, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA). The power warning was initially issued for late Monday afternoon, and was subsequently extended to cover the same time on Tuesday, because solar generation dips as the sun sets. "We ask the public to reduce energy consumption during the early evening hours when the reserve ratio falls," Yoshihiko Isozaki, deputy chief cabinet secretary, told a regular press briefing. But he warned that residents should do what was needed to stay cool and avoid heatstroke. Much of … [Read more...] about Japan swelters as heatwave prompts power crunch warning

Developers expect smoother LNG policy planning
The input price of imported liquefied natural gas (LNG) fluctuates between 15-20 cents/kW while the saleable electricity price is currently 6-7 cents/kW only. This will be an obstacle in the future because Electricity of Vietnam (EVN) will have to buy high and sell low. Despite the mandatory use of the standard form wholesale market power purchase agreement (PPA), complete with untenable fuel cost pass-through clauses being imposed on would-be LNG project sponsors, the market will never accept the proposition. Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh questioned why the latest draft of the Power Development Plan VIII (PDP8) seeks to effectively block any new solar power projects until 2030, since “solar power costs are getting cheaper and cheaper, and energy storage battery technology is becoming more advanced at more acceptable pricing”. The LNG gas power project is scheduled to start construction in the second quarter of 2022 According to calculations by the Ministry of … [Read more...] about Developers expect smoother LNG policy planning
Vietnam strives to boost energy transition: official
Addressing a seminar in Hanoi on June 22, Hoang Tien Dung, Director of the Electricity and Renewable Energy Authority at the Ministry of Industry and Trade, said as Vietnam is a dynamic economy with fast growth for many consecutive years, demand for energy, especially electricity, has been on the rise. With its own efforts and assistance from partners, the country is gradually reducing power sources using fossil fuel and promoting new, clean, and renewable energy, he said, noting that this is also an inevitable trend that helps guarantee a sustainable economy. So far, Vietnam has obtained certain results in increasing the share of renewable power in its power system. It is planning to develop lower-carbon power generation and accelerate fuel transition in the coming time, Dung said. However, the official pointed out that the emergence of new electricity sources has also posed the system to sustainability and stability challenges, which requires coordination in terms of both … [Read more...] about Vietnam strives to boost energy transition: official
US willing to share technology to help Vietnam in energy transition
Providing a fresh perspective on how the transition could be executed effectively, the US Embassy shared its experiences in developing policy regarding transformation and potential support. The US is willing to share its technology, capital, and policy/technical expertise to help Vietnam in energy transition, Sean M. Lawlor, an energy officer at Econ-ESTH Section from the US Embassy in Vietnam said at a conference held in Hanoi this week. The conference themed “Strategies & Partnerships to accelerate Vietnam’s energy transition” was jointly organized by Cong Thuong Newspaper and GE Vietnam, one of the first American companies opening representative office in Hanoi in 1993, even before the US embargo was lifted. “The US initiated the energy switch more than a decade ago and has reported a drop in the use of coal by half, a jump of natural gas to 38% in the country’s energy mix, and clean energy solutions as favored by the government," Sean M. Lawlor said. He added that … [Read more...] about US willing to share technology to help Vietnam in energy transition
Investors neglect seeking fundamental solutions for thermoelectric ash, slag
Ash and slag storage yards of thermal power plants in Binh Thuan Province are on the verge of overloading. (Photo: SGGP) There are two pictures with two different shades of color of thermoelectric fly ash and slag in the Southern region. In Binh Thuan Province, the total amount of ash and slag from thermal power plants stagnant in storage yards has reached about 12 million tons by the beginning of 2022. Meanwhile, the total amount of fly ash and slag at the Duyen Hai Thermal Power Plant, built in 2015 in Tra Vinh Province, is roughly 3.67 million tons. From the time it was put into operation until the end of April 2022, the total amount of fly ash and slag generated by the Duyen Hai Thermal Power Plant was 7.88 million tons, and about 4.2 million tons were reused. There has been no consistent and radical solution for thermoelectric fly ash and slag. Dumpsite out of storage, consumption stagnant According to the report of the Department of Natural Resources and Environment of … [Read more...] about Investors neglect seeking fundamental solutions for thermoelectric ash, slag
