(VOVworld) – The fourth Thang Long-Hanoi ancient dance festival with performances staged by amateur artists took place in Hanoi on Thursday. Eight performed dances are divided into two genres: one for spiritual and religious events and the other for folk festivals. Chairman of Hanoi’s Literature and Arts Association Nguyen Viet Bang said from now until 2015, Hanoi plans to revitalise and record between 35 and 40 most unique dances to popularise them among Vietnamese and foreign public. Fewer people are going out of their way to see Vietnamese dance performances. At many shows the audiences seem uninterested, with people falling asleep or leaving midway through the performance. A somber picture It’s no exaggeration to call the state of Vietnamese dance somber. The latest trend in entertainment has turned to the music show featuring singing stars. Therefore, there is little investment into quality dancing programs with the proper costumes, choreography, lighting and sound. Watching a ballet at the Municipal Theater, it is clear that much of the disinterest from the Vietnamese audience stems from not understanding the meaning of each dance movement and each act. By the end of the performance dance students and teachers along with a handful of foreigners are the only ones left to absorb something from the emotion of the compositions by Tchaikovski or Beethoven, and contorted movements of the skilled dancers. The first Beijing International Dance Festival raised its curtain on May, 9 at the Tianqiao Theater in downtown Beijing. The opening performance was called "Her Story", and was presented by the Hong Kong City Contemporary Dance Company. The opening scene is set in Jiangyong County in Hunan Province in southern China , several hundred years ago. A group of sworn sisters swap tales of their joys and sorrows through a mysterious language that they embroidered on their handkerchiefs and fans. Ancient Greek dances and “post-modern” dances of America will be performed through body-language and hilarious rhythms in “Dance, my story” at HCM City-based Ben Thanh Theatre on April 7. Choreographer and dancer Dominique Boivin, who is called “Bolshy Boy”, will bring fun to Vietnamese viewers through his unique funny gestures. “For me, it is an adventurous experiment to make this solo dance. How an artist can use his body to express the history of dancing arts, performing different styles of different ages and feature male and female characters,” said Boivin.
