The exhibition tournament closed at My Dinh National Stadium in Hanoi on Tuesday night as Vietnam's U23 national football team went through with no loss game, bringing an impressive performance to earn the final 1-1 draw against Uzbekistan. Vietnam's U23 team entered the game with both excitement and anxiety given a big history with their opponent. Uzbekistan’s U23 team was crowned the champion of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) U23 Championship in China last January after defeating Vietnam at the final match under heavy blizzards. Vietnam's national U-23 football team qualified for the semifinals of the AFC U-23 Championship following a historic victory over Iraq on Saturday. Against the competition's former champion, the Vietnamese team was considered the underdog but surprisingly took the lead with an early goal. Iraq equalized with a successful penalty kick later in the first half, and a goalless second half brought the two teams to extra time, which saw each team score twice. Vietnam finally emerged victorious in the penalty shootout after successfully converting all five shots, while one penalty shot from the Iraqi team was blocked by the Vietnamese goalkeeper. In the remaining quarterfinal matches, Qatar beat Palestine 3-2 while Uzbekistan achieved a 4-0 victory over the reigning champion Japan and South Korea eliminated Malaysia after a 2-1 win. Football squad closing in on selection of new coach Secretary General of the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) Le Hoai Anh recently announced the final decision on hiring the next coach for the team will be made in May. Currently, 16 foreign coaches have been nominated for the position as chief coach of Vietnamese national male team, he said. Doan Ngoc Hao of the Vietnam national futsal team has been hit with a two-year ban for a doping offence, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has announced. Hao, a midfielder, tested positive for levo-methamphetamine following Vietnam's match against Iraq at the 2014 AFC Futsal Championship on April 30, and is suspended until May 25, 2016. The Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) has received the AFC’s announcement and is responsible for assisting in the imposition of the punishment. Another Asian player Avchiev Takhir of Kyrgyzstan has also been suspended for two years for a doping violation. Defender Avchiev failed a doping test following Kyrgyzstan's match against Palestine on May 19 during the AFC Challenge Cup.
