Cambodia hopes to develop region’s traditional sports

(Source: VNA) Phnom Penh (VNA) – Cambodia is hoping to develop traditional sports in Southeast Asia into modern ones so that they can be included  in international events like the Southeast Asia n Games (SEA Games), Asian Games, and Olympics. The Cambodian Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports held a workshop from August 8 to 11 to discuss the preservation of traditional sports to improve the awareness of the ASEAN identity, as part of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) action plan on sport for 2021 - 2025, said the ministry’s Under Secretary of State Bou Chumserey. A priority of the country, which holds the ASEAN Chairmanship in 2022, is to enhance cooperation in preserving traditional sports and draft an ASEAN statement on upholding the bloc’s identity through the protection and maintenance of traditional sports and games. Greece presents EUR 50,000 in support of Vietnamese sport

The donation aims to help Vietnam promote sport development, according to the administration. Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Hoang Dao Cuong emphasized that the visit by Dendias and the gift demonstrate Greece’s support for the development of Vietnamese sport. Vietnam got disadvantaged when Hoang Thi Bao Tram and Bach Ngoc Thuy Duong both played black against Ticia Gara and Zsoka Gaal. In the midgame, Gara made a big mistake that helped Tram find the way to win after 59 moves. However, Duong could not make a comeback and accepted defeat. Greece hails Vietnam’s role in region

Myanmar ambassador to China died on Sunday

Myanmar's ambassador to China died suddenly on Sunday in the southwestern Chinese city of Kunming, according to an obituary in Myanmar state media and diplomatic sources in Beijing. The obituary for Ambassador U Myo Thant Pe by Myanmar's foreign ministry in a state newspaper on Monday did not specify his cause of death. Diplomats in Beijing and a Chinese language Myanmar media report said the cause was likely to be a heart attack. U Myo Thant Pe was last seen on Saturday meeting a local official in the southwestern Chinese province of Yunnan which borders Myanmar, according to a local news report. The Myanmar embassy in China did not immediately respond to a query for comment. U Myo Thant Pe was appointed ambassador to China in 2019 and stayed in his post after Myanmar's military took power in a coup in February 2021. The top ranked national player will take part in the event for the 13th time since his debut in 2005, one more than the current record held by Chinese legend Lin Dan. Malaysian prodigy Lee Chong Wei took part in 11 championships. Lin, who won five trophies, and Lee, who entered four final matches, retired in 2019 and 2020, respectively. Minh is one of 54 male athletes at the tournament which will be held in Japan from August 22-28. Cuba brings oil depot fire under control, worst in island’s history

Firefighters on Tuesday finally overcame what officials described as the worst fire in Cuba's history that over five days destroyed 40% of the Caribbean island's main fuel storage facility and caused massive blackouts. Reuters witnesses reported the raging flames that ravaged a four-tank segment of the Matanzas super tanker port had died down and the towering plumes of thick black smoke streaming from the area were diminished and now mostly gray. Matanzas is Cuba's largest port for receiving crude oil and fuel imports. Cuban heavy crude, as well as fuel oil and diesel stored in Matanzas in 10 huge tanks, are mainly used to generate electricity on the island. Lightning struck one fuel storage tank on Friday evening. Vietnam wins four medals at 34th International Olympiad in Informatics
