About 100 liters of a toxic mixture of oil and water and 60 kilograms of oil-contaminated soil have been collected as workers deal with the petroleum-laced liquid from Hanoi's water supply. Since Tuesday, 30 clearance workers and three excavators have been cleaning the oil spill from sections of a creek that's upstream the Da River which is sourced by the Vinaconex Water Supply Joint Stock Company (Viwasupco) to process and supply clean water to 10 districts in the southwestern part of Hanoi. Viwasupco sent the workers to the Tram mountain creek in Phu Minh Commune, Ky Son District of Hoa Binh Province, a northwestern neighbor of Hanoi. A 2.5 ton tanker was seen dumping used oil into the creek on Tuesday last week. Two out of five kilometers of the Tram creek have been contaminated with oil. As of Thursday morning, oil-stained vegetation had been cleared on either side of more than one kilometer of the creek. Oil filters installed on canal flowing into water treatment plant
Of a total of 21 filters, 18 filters were installed horizontally over the canal by 15 specialists of Vietnam Environmental Incident Response Center Friday morning. An additional three were scheduled to be installed in the evening. Each filter, 15-meters long and two-meters wide, was placed 100 to 150 meters apart. They are stabilized by floating rubber tops. The filters were made by the center, said director Pham Van Son. "The filters can block oil and chemical substances similar to oil," Son said. The center has also collected oil-stained soil and vegetation along the canals in coordination with Vinaconex Water Supply Join Stock Company (Viwasupco), which processes and supplies clean water to around one million people in the southwestern part of Hanoi. Son said dealing with oil spill incidents needs not be too complicated if proper cleanup procedures are followed. Workers engaged in the oil cleanup at sections of the creek that feeds the Da River have said that they expect to work at … [Read more...] about Oil filters installed on canal flowing into water treatment plant
Hanoians struggle for drinking water after river contaminated with oil
The water ran over Nguyen Thi Anh's hands as her granddaughter poured slowly from a plastic bottle. The 57-year-old woman used the water to rinse the dishes after cleaning them with tap water. In the last few days she has been unable to use tap water for much. Last night she had stayed up until midnight with her children to collect water from a tanker truck dispatched by local authorities. "I was sleeping when the security guy knocked on the door and told us the water tanker was coming. We immediately went downstairs to get some water. I was so tired and could not wake up early this morning." But the good thing was that the family had enough fresh water, she added. Anh is one of hundreds of thousands of Hanoians who are trying to get used to bottled water for drinking and cooking to brushing teeth, since they cannot use water from their taps. ExxonMobil petroleum projects in central Vietnam ongoing as planned
"The Vietnam Oil and Gas Group (PVN) has said that petroleum projects in central Vietnam, including projects at sea and on land, are being carried out as planned by PVN, Petrovietnam Exploration Production Corporation (PVEP) and ExxonMobil," Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Le Thi Thu Hang said at a press meeting Thursday. Hang was responding to a reporter’s inquiry regarding a rumor that ExxonMobil was withdrawing itself from the Ca Voi Xanh (Blue Whale) project, a natural gas field offshore Vietnam. PVN, PVEP and ExxonMobil signed agreement frameworks for project development and selling gas from the Ca Voi Xanh gas field in 2017. The gas field, about 88 km to the east of central Vietnam’s shores, is operated by ExxonMobil. The field is estimated to have a yield of about 150 billion cubic meters of gas, according to the Quang Ngai Province Investment Promotion Center. Between 9-10 billion cubic meters of gas are extracted every year. PVN has invested about $4.6 billion in the … [Read more...] about ExxonMobil petroleum projects in central Vietnam ongoing as planned
250,000 Hanoi families get tap water again, safety announcement pending
One of the five distributors that get their water from Viwasupco also said that an announcement of the water quality would have to come from authorities later. "We have re-supplied water normally. Whether the water is safe enough or not, Hanoi's Department of Health and scientists will make an announcement," said director Nguyen Huu Toi of the Viwaco Joint Stock Company (Viwaco). The water supply was cut on Tuesday as Viwasupco said it needed to clean its pipes and reservoirs following findings of oil contamination. Water has been resupplied to its over 147,000 customers in the southwestern part of the capital, including the districts of Thanh Xuan, Nam Tu Liem and Cau Giay. However, the administrations of several apartment complexes in Thanh Xuan and Cau Giay Districts have continued to advise their residents against using the water for drinking and cooking. Another Viwasupco distributor, the Ha Dong Water One-Member Limited Liability Company (Hadowa), has also … [Read more...] about 250,000 Hanoi families get tap water again, safety announcement pending
