Jakarta (VNA) – Indonesia's state-owned electricity company PLN has axed a project to develop a coal-fired power plant as the country chases its long-delayed commitments to cut carbon dioxide emissions . PLN vice president of corporate communications Gregorius Adi Trianto confirmed that the company had canceled its plan to build the 1-gigawatt (GW) plant in Indramayu, West Java. It proactively stopped borrowing funds for the project as part of PLN's efforts to reach the country’s carbon neutral goal by 2060, Gregorius was quoted by local media as saying. The project’s termination came after Japan announced that it had canceled a plan to provide a loan worth 1.7 billion (12.55 million USD) for developing the Indramayu plant amid growing international criticism of coal power plants, a major source of greenhouse gas emissions. Northern Vietnam hit by massive power outages
Around 1 p.m., power went out in Hanoi’s inner districts like Ba Dinh, Cau Giay, Nam Tu Liem, Hai Ba Trung, and Hoang Mai. Nghia, manager of an office building in the Cau Giay District, stated that the power was restored after about 30 minutes. However the voltage spiked to more than 240 kilovolts (kV), causing some electrical equipment to be damaged. The damage is being assessed by building management. An employee of a media company in Hai Ba Trung District reported that while eating lunch at the office, power suddenly went out then came back on and then went out again. The loss of power recurred 10-15 minutes, causing many company equipment to be "turned on and off multiple times." Hanoi University of Science and Technology, located in Hai Ba Trung District, had to announce that "the entire school lost power due to a power grid failure in the city. 17 Vietnamese universities enter URAP rankings
Hanoi (VNA) – The University Ranking by Academic Performance (URAP), a Turkish non-profit organisation, has honoured 17 Vietnamese universities for their outstanding academic performance globally in 2022. Accordingly, the Ho Chi Minh City based-Ton Duc Thang University was ranked 427th, Duy Tan University 446th, Vietnam National University in HCM City 1,013rd, and Vietnam National University in Hanoi 1,104th. Other universities included were Hanoi Medical University (1,235th), Hanoi University of Technology (1,379th), Nguyen Tat Thanh University (1,526th), Hue University (2,178th), HCM City University of Technology (2,203rd), and Can Tho University (2,291st). Last year, Vietnam had 12 universities on the URAP ’s list.
