Rains to persist in northern, southern Vietnam until end of month
Rains in northern and southern Vietnam are expected to decrease in intensity but will persist until the end of the month, while hot weather has begun to affect the central region. Rainfall in northern provinces will drop to between 20 and 50 millimeters on Wednesday, according to the National Center for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting. Showers and thunderstorms are forecast to continue dampening the region over the next days. It will be more likely to rain in the evening, the center added. Localities in southern Vietnam and the Central Highlands will also experience similar weather patterns from May 25 to 29. The rains may be accompanied by thunderstorms, gusts, and hail, and pose risks of flash floods, landslides, and flooding in certain areas. A landslide triggered by heavy rain in northern mountainous Tuyên Quang Province. — VNA/VNS Photo HÀ NỘI — At least five people died and five others were injured after heavy rain and flooding hit the northern and northern-central regions over the past few days, according to the National Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control. Four people lost their lives in flash floods and landslides triggered by downpours in the mountainous provinces of Điện Biên, Tuyên Quang and Hòa Bình. One person in central Quảng Ngãi Province died after being struck by lightining. 317 houses were destroyed in the localities. Over 19,200ha of rice and crops, 421.6ha of aquaculture farms and nearly 7,000 animals and poultry were either inundated or swept away.
