VietNamNet Bridge – Experts believe that the launching of Viber’s version in Vietnamese language and the version for computers would have direct impacts on the OTTs with the focus on basic communications such as Skype, Yahoo Messenger, rather than on the mobile platforms OTTs like Zalo, Kakao Talk or Line. On May 7, Viber updated the 3.0 version for iOS and Android, providing the Vietnamese version, allowing users to use Viber in a more convenient way. The difference between Viber and the other similar apps is that Viber can automatically change the language to come in line with the language of the devices. This means that users can only use Vietnamese version, if the device’s language is Vietnamese. Not only pleasing users with the indigenous language and the image messaging, Viber has also introduced the version for Windows and Mac OS computer operation systems. Software maker Microsoft Corp is selling about 1,500 of its patents to Chinese device maker Xiaomi, a rare departure for the U.S. company and part of what the two companies say is the start of a long-term partnership. The deal, announced on Wednesday, also includes a patent cross-licensing arrangement and a commitment by Xiaomi to install copies of Microsoft software, including Office and Skype, on its phones and tablets. Both companies declined to discuss financial terms of the deal. "This is a very big collaboration agreement between the two companies," Wang Xiang, senior vice president at Xiaomi, said by telephone ahead of the deal. Analysts said Xiaomi's ambitions to be a major player outside China were hampered by weak patent protection and a fear of a prolonged legal battle. "This deal might just give them enough of a patent trove to move to Western markets," said Sameer Singh, a UK-based analyst. "Their position in China has been under constant attack from even lower-end Android … [Read more...] about Microsoft sells patents to Xiaomi, builds ‘long-term partnership’
Shiny new iPhones always get the most attention. But it's iOS 7, the updated version of Apple (AAPL)'s mobile-device operating system, that will have the biggest impact on users. The new operating system, now being installed on hundreds of millions of iPhones, iPads and iPods, introduces a host of useful new features and functions. Apple users who don't like change may initially have a tough time with iOS 7 and its core apps. Gone are most of the familiar muted-palette design elements and those meant to mimic real-world objects -- the wooden shelves of the Newsstand app, for instance, and the image of the desk calendar. In their place are flat, brightly colored icons that, depending on your taste, are either hip and modern-looking or cartoon-like. I've used the new software on the iPhone 5s and 5c, as well on an iPhone 5 and a third-generation iPad. … [Read more...] about Apple’s iOS 7 is a potent upgrade
