Viet Nam News LONDON — British MPs overwhelmingly backed a bill on Wednesday empowering Prime Minister Theresa May to start negotiations on leaving the European Union, bringing Brexit a significant step closer. Members of the House of Commons voted by 494 votes to 122 for a law enabling May to trigger Article 50 of the EU’s Lisbon Treaty, which begins two years of talks on pulling out of the 28-nation bloc. "We’ve seen a historic vote tonight -- a big majority for getting on with negotiating our exit from the EU and a strong, new partnership with its member states," said Brexit minister David Davis. The unamended two-clause bill now moves to the House of Lords, where there may be more opposition from unelected peers -- and where May’s Conservative party does not have a majority. But its passage through the Commons, where two-thirds of MPs had campaigned against Brexit ahead of the June referendum, puts May on course to begin the withdrawal process by the … [Read more...] about British MPs approve bill to start Brexit – World – Vietnam News Politics, Business, Economy, Society, Life, Sports

Elections loom as Spanish MPs reject government bid
MADRID — Spanish MPs on Wednesday rejected acting Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy’s bid for a second term, deepening the country’s political crisis and triggering a countdown to a third election in a year. Rajoy, the leader of the conservative Popular Party (PP), lost the vote of confidence with 189 votes against and 170 in favour after an often acrimonious debate in parliament. He needed an absolute majority of 176 seats in the 350-seat assembly but was backed only by his own party, the centrist Ciudadanos and a lone MP from the Canary Islands. The PP, in power since 2011, won the most seats in elections held in December and June but fell short of an absolute majority both times as voters angry over corruption and austerity flocked to new formations. Another confidence vote will be held on Friday in which Rajoy only needs more votes in favour than against but there is little to indicate he will win that one either. The Socialists, who came second in the polls, have … [Read more...] about Elections loom as Spanish MPs reject government bid
European MPs support Vietnam’s view on East Sea dispute
VietNamNet Bridge - Speaking during a business trip in Vietnam, the European parliamentary delegation said it fully supported the view of Vietnam in the East Sea issue, based on the principles of maintaining peace, adhering to international law, and maintaining equality among nations. The European parliamentary delegation led by Mr. Werner Langen (third from right) visited Vietnam from November 4-6. The announcement was made by the European Parliament’s Delegation for relations with Southeast Asia and ASEAN countries (DASE) after the visit to Vietnam. Regarding the tense situation in the East Sea, DASE Chairman Werner Langen, head of the delegation, reaffirmed the EU’s stance that all concerned parties should seek peaceful solutions which are relevant to international law, particularly the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). Langen said that the East Sea is not only the issue of Vietnam but of many other member countries of ASEAN and the EU supports … [Read more...] about European MPs support Vietnam’s view on East Sea dispute
Myanmar’s Suu Kyi sends new MPs to parliament school
Aung San Suu Kyi is sending her newly-elected MPs on a crash course on Myanmar's parliament as they prepare to take their seats for the first time early next year, her party said Thursday. The veteran campaigner's National League for Democracy party won a thunderous majority in landmark November polls that are set to tip the balance of power away from the military for the first time in decades. Some 390 NLD MPs will flood into parliament in February, mostly political newcomers with no experience of the Naypyidaw legislature, which itself has only been in operation since a quasi-civilian regime replaced military rule in 2011. "The new MPs do know about politics but they need to learn more about the parliament," party spokesman Win Htein told AFP. He said a series of classes would teach the budding politicians about the operations of the legislature as well other key topics like the country's controversial army-drafted constitution to help "improve their performance" as MPs. The … [Read more...] about Myanmar’s Suu Kyi sends new MPs to parliament school
