The opening ceremony of the 2017 ASEAN Film Festival was launched at the United Nations Office in Geneva, Switzerland, on March 27th. It is among events to mark the 50th anniversary of ASEAN. The opening ceremony saw the presence of Director-General of the UN Office at Geneva Michael Moller, and Ambassadors and diplomats from ASEAN member nations. The film festival will feature films originating from ASEAN member states. The objectives of the ASEAN Geneva Film Festival 2017 include sharing the diversity and way of life of the ASEAN communities; cultivating a better understanding of the values and cultures of ASEAN communities; presenting ASEAN’s achievements and challenges in advancing the socioeconomic development of its people, and encouraging and celebrating film productions in ASEAN countries. According to the Ministry, the film was selected from four candidates, with the two finalists being Victor Vu’s film and Cuoc Doi Cua Yen (“Yen’s life”) by director Dinh Tuan Vu. The films were assessed by an eight-member jury, who observe the country’s cinematic activities and carried out their evaluations in a careful and objective manner. Yellow Flowers on the Green Grass was produced at the request of the MoCST’s Department of Cinema. Based on the novel of the same name by best-selling author Nguyen Nhat Anh, the film offers a return to childhood through the story of two young brothers in rural Central Vietnam in the 1980s. After its release in 2015, the film became an unprecedented phenomenon in Vietnam’s cinema as its box-office record reached nearly VND 80 billion (US$3.59 million) after one month hitting the big screen. At the ongoing Francophone Film Festival, there is a difference between the foreign movies screened and the Vietnamese entry, Victor Vu’s high-profile 2015 “Toi thay hoa vang tren co xanh” (literally, I See Yellow Flowers on the Green Grass): the former tell good, important stories while the Vietnamese film tells little and that in a showy way. From the title to the poster to the trailer, you expect to see much poetry in Victor Vu’s movie. “I See Yellow Flowers on the Green Grass” - hmm, you think, this is a good visual, poetic way to begin. The trailer also promises some great music, breathtaking camerawork, heart-warming rural scenes and cute child actors. On September 28th, the organizing board of “The festival on the memory of the Long Bien bridge” sold at auction 99 paintings to enable more money for expenditure to organize the festival to be held from October 10th to 11th 2009. 30 domestic and international enterprises participated in the auction. 10 of the paintings were sold to add more than 200 million VND for the festival.
