International health experts said that education and accurate messaging are critical to avoid stigma in dealing with Monkeypox outbreaks. Communication plays a crucial role in controlling Monkeypox, a viral zoonosis with symptoms similar to those seen in the past in smallpox patients, said Eric Dziuban, Country Director for the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Vietnam. Vietnam to monitor entrants from countries with monkeypox
Thailand, Singapore, South Korea, China and Japan are some of the countries where monkeypox has been detected. Per the latest decision, foreign entrants from countries with monkeypox will have their body temperatures checked and be subject to other monitoring measures. Those suspected to be infected with the condition will be isolated and have their biological samples taken for testing. The ministry is yet to issue specific instructions on how foreign entrants from countries with monkeypox should be monitored, or when exactly these measures are to be applied. Vietnam has not recorded any monkeypox cases so far. Last week, Ho Chi Minh City proposed that foreign entrants are asked to complete medical declarations at the border as one of the anti-monkeypox measures. Nguyen Van Kinh, former director of the National Hospital for Tropical Diseases, said he believed health facilities are likely to be among the first places where monkeypox cases would be detected, instead of airports, … [Read more...] about Vietnam to monitor entrants from countries with monkeypox

(Photo: AFP/VNA) New Delhi (VNA) – Scientists at the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR)’s National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune are training experts from Vietnam, Myanmar, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Philippines, Sri Lanka and Thailand to tackle monkeypox amidst escalating concerns over the disease. As part of India’s response to protecting its population from the new threat, NIV scientists are training their counterparts in these countries on testing, clinical symptoms, case definitions, sample collection, and equipment required for testing. NIV Pune has been conducting such training programmes for other countries from time to time, like it did during the COVID-19 pandemic and even before for biosafety and bio-risk mitigation, said Dr Pragya Yadav, a senior scientist at NIV Pune. If these countries develop the capacity to diagnose and detect monkeypox cases, that would … [Read more...] about Indian scientists helps build capacity for Vietnam on monkeypox control

WHO vows nothing ‘ridiculous’ as public submits ideas to rename monkeypox
Poxy McPoxface, TRUMP-22 or Mpox: these some of the ideas sent in by the public to the World Health Organization as it seeks a new name for monkeypox. Often disease names are chosen behind closed doors by a technical committee, but the WHO has this time decided to open up the process to the public. After a slow start, dozens of submissions have now been made from a range of contributors including academics, doctors, and a gay community activist. They range from the technical (OPOXID-22, submitted by Harvard Medical School emergency physician Jeremy Faust) to the farcical (Poxy McPoxface, submitted by Andrew Yi in an allusion to Boaty McBoatface - almost the name of a British polar research vessel after a public vote on the choice). Pressure is growing for a new name for the disease, in part because critics say it is misleading, since monkeys are not the original animal host. A group of leading scientists wrote a position paper in June calling for a name that was "neutral, … [Read more...] about WHO vows nothing ‘ridiculous’ as public submits ideas to rename monkeypox
